In 1988, I'm sitting in the Nassau Colisseum watching the Lovesexy concert extravaganza below, and I found myself singing "Annastesia" at the top of my lungs, which in turn prompted me to go home and re-evaluate the "crazy" cassette that I'd only briefly listened to & was embarrassed to have out in the open due to the "nude man sitting in a giant phallic flower" on the cover.
I know it sounds weird, but considering the fact that the Lovesexy album as a whole is what convinced me that Prince is a Musical genius...I guess that one pivotal moment singing "...love is God, God is Love, Girls & Boys, love God above..." with a lighter in the air amidst thousands of screaming fans was my "first musical moment". I became a fan when my brother played For You and I was sitting outside his door thinking "damn people can do that with their voice".
Genius I guess would have to be when I personally listened to the Prince album and heard the piano in When we're Dancing and the guitar in Babmi. For some reason both made me cry...not out of sadness, but out of movement. I had never experienced that before. Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

As a 5 year old, "Little Red Corvette" was the song that made me realize the genius of this man. The lyrics were so clever/on point that it made everything else on radio/MTV seem average by comparison. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

I was also really impressed with Tambourine and Condition of the Heat. But really Bob George showed me he had very few limitations creatively, and could go wherever he felt like. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Sure it was great music, solid, good song writing, good musicianship, but they weren't ground breaking. He wasn't really playing with sounds, putting a drum machine through a guitar pedal, or anything like that. They were just straight ahead pop albums. It really wasn't until Controversy that he started delving into new sounds, like on "Sexuality" or "Private Joy". But earlier? Nah.
Perhaps it wasn't a matter of "hearing" something groundbreaking as much as it was realizing that it all was coming from one kid. I mean, is there a 20 year old around now that is doing something comparable? In 1978 the only other reference point was Stevie Wonder...hence the genius talk beginning....

Raspberry Beret. The little jingle bell sound at the beginning makes me think of reindeer pracing and Christmas and after hearing that sound I knew that Prince was a genious even though I still can't figure out what this song or Starfish and Coffee are about.Genius doesn't need to be explained or make sense it is just there and you know it when you hear, see or feel it.
I heard it is Raspberry Beret,I saw it in the video and I felt it when I heard Still Would Stand All Time.

Now being born in 84', my first memorable experience realizing without a doubt that he was a flat out genius for me wasn't until The Symbol Album. I know this era is looooong after most had already come to realize his genius, but 3 Chains O' Gold is what did it for me. I remember stopping what I was doing (video game) because I couldn't concentrate on the game while trying to process what was going on with the song. The first solo at 1:42 accompanied with the vocals just sounded so ominous to me. Then when the second solo- so triumphant. And of the course the dive bomb in to chaos at the end sealed the deal. The colors and imagery that took shape, and the feelings evoked changed my world from that point on... Isn't the expression on my complexion enough?

When Doves cry was my first exposure to prince at the age of 12 and I thought it was amazing. Genius kicked in when I started buying the songs-it was the B sides that did it. How could WDC be backed by 17 Days...How coudPR be backed by GOD etc..the realisation that it was seemingly endless was beyond mind boggling-it was a sweet shop.....God I miss those days

I mean, I had Dirty Mind and Controversy - and loved them to death, but when the needle hit the groove on Little Red Corvette, it was all over. Little Red Corvette is amazing..I had Let's Go Crazy...but damn...LRC just blew my mind... Song that made me realize Prince is not a one hit wonder genius: When Doves Cry and Still Would Stand All Time (most under-rated Prince song EVER)..the words just spoke to me..

Dirty Mind was the record that caused me to love Prince, but I don't know if I was old enough or knew enough to say he was a genius. For me, it was when I first heard someone say, "Prince is a genius" during the time of Purple Rain, that I scanned my fourteen year old brain from Dirty Mind to Purple Rain and said to myself "Okay, if genius means doing something that no one else has done or doing it better than anyone else, then, yes, Prince is a genius." So, I may have felt that he was a genius, and then someone gave me the vocabulary or terminology to name or identify what I was feeling about how his work moved me in relation to other work.
However, I do remember that with For You and Prince, Prince was being marketed as the next Stevie Wonder, "Soft and Wet" was a major jam on Black radio, and I remember so many people saying "Prince is a bad muthafucker." Music critic Nelson George talks about being in college and going to a Prince concert expecting to see a hip, singer/songwriter in the vein of Stevie Wonder. Even during our sixth grade end of the year classroom party, the teacher turned off the record player because so many of us were singing "Still Waiting" too loudly. Now, being a "bad muthafucker" does not equate to being a genius, but I don't think that it is a stretch if someone, especially someone listening to Black radio, would have said--"Wait a minute; this guy may have something" when they heard songs like "Soft and Wet," "Sexy Dancer," "Bambi," or even "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" mixed into the other songs from those two albums. (Again, I was too young to know about genius.) I'm sure that a lot of people said, "I'm going to keep my eyes and ears on this dude." None of that means that they saw him as a genius, but I don't think that it is all fandom that would make someone say that they saw genius in Prince from one of those first albums.

When Doves Cry was the song that made me think he was a genius. I was young and knew of some of his past hits. But soon after PR-I went through his back catalogue. Just listening to his albums, you know that there is something extra special about his music. That's when I really knew he was a genius. Just thinking about this the other day! When I'd listen to songs as I got older, I realized that I can't think of any other artist that has some of the intros that he does! Pure Genius, and "When Doves Cry" is a good example of this......

The first time I listened to the Purple Rain album.
This was in 1992 when I was getting into Prince and I had heard the obvious hits from that album, but when I first listende to it start to finish - by the time The Beuatiful Ones finished, wow, that was my "he is a genius!" moment.
And since then he hasnt done anything to make me think otherwise!
