Absolutely 100% for sure. I just finished listening to the Lovesexy tour rehearsal - OMG was that a plate full of funk! I hadn't realized just how intricate and layered all that funk was on that tour, but WOW.

Making the pop world come to you, then whiping your ass with it and doing what you want IS Funky. Prince did it what 3 times? lol a lot of old school funk stars would do anything to have his cache, his options, his status and access, his skrilla. For your information JB was in the FIRST class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, got his start subbing for Little Richard, blew the Stones off stage..At TAMI a show designed for white teens. If he was too funky wouldnt he refuse to share a stage with Jan and Dean?. James also sang gospel into the wee hours with Elvis everytime they crossed paths, Elvis was Pop but they were brothers in music. James was also humbled late in life when the Grammy's recognized him for his lifetime achievment-he had every opportunity to say " i aint goin to that pop shit i'm too funky" but guess what? he showed up, in a pop world.Nobody here is attacking James, the originator of Funk and Soul nor are we questioning the place of the Funk masters of the 70's. Prince is not one of the masters, but he is a major contributor who put his own stank on tha funk and even the masters recognize. If George Clinton calls you funky how can some anonymous guy on the org take that away? are any of you haters more qualified than George?. Maceo aint no lightweight of Funk, he would not play with anybody he didnt respect musically and he backed the masters. James did what he did in Boston for us, but if he was alive today i'm sure he wouldnt use that selfless act as a reason to minimize another mans musical contributions. We didnt ask was Prince a major contributor to civil rights. [Edited 6/4/10 3:28am] | |
