isn't there a story of Rick James literally stealing prince's keyboards after the tour and taking the sounds Prince had painstakingly programmed in himself?
I seem to remember reading something like that....

Much as I respect Rick's musical talent, the Prince bashing seemed to be more out of jealousy rather then hatred. He even dogged Prince in 96' for "Betcha By Golly Wow" and we all know Prince would never intentionally embarass himself with a bad cover. That was Rick's way of making himself feel better after the whole prison-thing & not being relevant anymore. I don't feel bashing another artist publicly is cool. I heard of Prince making negative comments about other artist but never with my own ears.

Rick was being Rick. He hated on a lot of acts. When he was coming around P-Funk was big. He hated on George Clinton and Bootsy big time. Even named his dog Bootsy. lol
Made the reference Elvis was big to the Beatles came along. That was his thing. After he stole the funk crown from George for a moment , Prince came in around 79' and started blowing up on black radio. Rick felt threatened as Prince became bigger. Had Prince as an opening act on his Super Freak Tour for a moment. Now I strongly disagree Prince was doing his thing as Prince was already setting his own standards around the same time as Rick James. Rick was copping P-Funk and Prince was taking funk to another level. THERE YOU HAVE IT!

I've heard that Prince refused to sign an autograph for Rick's mother when they were on tour together. If this is true, Rick would probably find even the littlest excuse in the future to hate him because he loved the hell out of his mother. He put that woman on a pedastol.
Rick was furious with Prince for becoming outrageous on his tour and then he would have to come on afterwards and top it. If anything, it was Rick's tour that taught Prince the value of being shocking because Rick was wild as hell from his very first album. Then Teena Marie opened for Prince on his next tour. I'm sure this probably made Rick furious also. I always wondered if Teena did that just to piss Rick off because she and Rick loved to fight. Then there was Prince beating Rick to the punch putting out Vanity 6 before Rick put out The Mary Jane Girls, which didn't help matters any more considering that Vanity had originally come to an awards show with Rick. Then, next thing you know, Jill Jones was in the Prince camp also. I think they both enjoyed feuding and getting back at each other. Prince enjoyed it too. He disrupted one of Rick's concerts by having his bodyguard carry him through the crowd. Prince always reminded me of the sneaky one who appeared innocent because he was so quiet while someone with a loud mouth like Rick blew up and lost his temper in the press. Prince just didn't talk to the press. That little heffer enjoyed that feud too. I think they both enjoyed feuding and I know I enjoyed it. Both of them released the best music of their entire career during those feuding years. . . . [Edited 5/10/10 14:56pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah,I have seen where Rick has mentioned this incident. If it's true, then I can't blame Rick for being pissed at Prince. It's NEVER cool to disrespect somebody's mother there was Prince beating Rick to the punch putting out Vanity 6 before Rick put out The Mary Jane Girls, which didn't help matters any more considering that Vanity had originally come to an awards show with Rick. Then, next thing you know, Jill Jones was in the Prince camp also.
Ironically, when Vanity finally left Prince, she went straight to Motown, which is where Rick was signed When Vanity appeared on Soul Train in 1984,she mentioned to Don Cornelius that her labelmate Rick James "helped me" at Motown.I guess she means that he gave her some advice? I always thought that she said that to get back at Prince, lol. Rick was silly for being pissed at Prince for creating Vanity 6.Yes,Prince beat him to the punch but the Mary Jane Girls were much more successful than Vanity 6.Songs like "All Night Love","Candy Man","Boys" "In My House" and others became huge hits.Only one Vanity 6 song,"Nasty Girl",became a hit. ... Prince took nothing from Prince. I have seen them both live several times since 1981. Even at his best , inthe early 80s, Rick couldnt touch Prince - but by that time noone could.
Rick's jealousy of Prince was blatant from day one. Over 25 years after that first tour together, Rick was still badmouthing Prince. Prince did nothing to him other than date Vanity and beat him thoroughly at being a funk legend.
