Was Rick James justified in his hatred of Prince? Rick has always stated Prince copied his style. Prince got his start as an opening act for Rick. Rick claimed Prince had no stage presence at the time and copied his style.....this maybe true, but at the time Prince wasn't "Purple Rain" Prince yet...the style that got him world wide notoriety had nothing to do with Rick's thigh high boot, braided hair, feather boa wearing style...but even in the later years he still claimed Prince was a Rick James ripoff...is this a valid point or was Rick's ego getting the best of him? I'm a fan of both so R.I.P. Rick btw...

I don't know about that, but Rick could never hate Prince as much as Prince hates his fans.

I read his (rick's)bio/watched most of his interviews and he admited there was some jelousy there, hes only human. But he praised Prince for being so innovative. Yes prince used to jump around back stage at R.J and M.J's concerts getting attention and there were a few times R.J wanted to "whoop his ass" but i think they both respected eachothers artistry. I don't think he hated Prince at all, and yes he did steal certain crowd chants rick did during the tour in which even Princes manager had to tell him to stop And I to love them both but Rick was just being honest. It's funny how Rick says Prince stole his act when on the recent Unsung episode of the Bar Kays, they talked about how Rick would come to their shows and take pictures of Larry Dodson and patterned a lot of his act after him.
Prince most likely took from Rick in the early days. Just like Rick wound up taking from Prince in the mid to late '80's. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Long live the King of funk: Prince. "I have so much love for Prince. But why don't they look at me that way"- MJ

As a young entertainer at the time watching rick who was an amazing performer must have influenced him on some level. "NO WAY!!!!!: I DONT AGREE::BITCH FIT IN FULL EFFECT yadayada:: Guess what.... its my opinion. And to me theres some Prince songs that do have a Rick James vibe to it; whether Prince did it consciously or not. Besides its silly to assume everyone will gather the same thing from a song.

I had no idea Rick got his style from Sisqo's Dad. (Larry Dodson.) [Edited 5/7/10 18:02pm] "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Just saying. | |

Just saying. That's humorous and quite true. And of course Adam got some of his inspiration elsewhere as well. But as a variation of the "MJ changed music. Quincy changed blonds." quote I'll take poetic license and say: "Prince stole Vanity. Rick stole the ruffles." There is no such thing as originality anyways. Everyone takes from something, someone, to get their inspiration. I just think Rick was mad Prince passed him

Get off the drugs because you got to be on them if you any similarity in P and Rick's music. If anything later on in the late 80s Rick stole P's song and clothes.
