The Arms Of Orion cd-single video experiment From http://www.princevault.co...s_Of_Orion
The CD single contained an unannounced .cdi file, which played a slideshow of unrelated pictures and poems with The Arms Of Orion as a soundtrack when entered into a computer. This video had no input from Prince and should not be considered a promotional video, but an experiment by Warner Bros. into the technology that was available using CD singles, and was advanced for its time. 
I didn't even think there were computer with CD-players anywhere on earth in october 1989!!! Obviously at the time no one could even discover this video until years later when they put the CD in their computer to rip it! Or what??? There were several major label CD releases in the late 80s early 90s that had so-called graphics. Some titles I remember are: Lou Reed - New York; Information Society; Fleetwood Mac - Behind the Mask. There was a sticker on the longbox (remember those?) which said "CD+graphics" and that the graphics part could be seen if you played it in a computer. I just popped my German 3" Cd-Single of The Arms Of Orion in and there was no .cdi file.  Maybe only the UK or Japanese CDs had it.

Computer could NEVER detect it; AFAIK someone once developed a hacky driver for Win95 PCs that could detect the file, but it won't pop up in regular PCS, AFAIK. I wanted to see if my Mac would recognize it, but it's a slot loading CD drive on my Mini and won't take a 3" disc - I don't dare use the plastic ring on a slot-loader. I might try an emulator or ISO burner to see if I can at least access the .cdi. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot. | |

I think I saw it mentioned in an ad. I was thinking that perhaps Wikipedia hasn't got the right date, I recall CD-i being much earlier -- but then again 1989 is really early. However, CD Video also dates from around that time, so it isn't impossible at all: they were doing crazy things at the time. © Bart Van Hemelen

However, CD Video also dates from around that time, so it isn't impossible at all: they were doing crazy things at the time. This era was the golden age, really: VCR's and crazy shit like CDV and stuff

it was around 1985 when sony/philips were able to use the CD as a data storage medium. So it was not unheard of. I do not know when it was first discovered but I do know it was known in the early 90s.
I remember it was talked about on AMP back in the day. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!" |
