Around The World In A Day is an emotional record, it's intensely angry at times, almost desperate. The brilliance is confined to special moments. The album opening with that scream feels subliminal. The ending of Paisley Park makes me wonder, 'what is he crying about?!' The scintillating melody that builds into Condition Of The Heart is quiet and defiant, you can almost feel how he's nursing himself. Raspberry Beret is the perfect Prince pop moment. Tambourine on the other hand, a monstrously funky jam, that drum beat! America grooves irresistably with that guitar edge, and the bass/orchestral melody of Pop Life is candy. Who climbs The Ladder everytime? Regardless, Temptation can deliver angels into Prince's pop rock heaven.
My vote unequivocally goes to the cold, nasty production on Parade. [This message was edited Wed Jan 22 9:54:42 PST 2003 by Anji]

If he had held back from putting out a follow up to Purple Rain(1984) until mid to late 1986 and that follow up was Sign O times with kiss added. Prince would have stayed on top and lovesexy would have sold way way better.
I know everyone will agree. Prince is not Madonna. Madonna stayed on top because she kept following trends and hired some of the best fashionable producers around. She always moved with the times: in the 8ties people like Pettibone, producers like William Orbit & Mirwais in the 9ties and after 2000. I don't know about Prince & marketing but i think it sucks. The last time i saw a good Prince video on Mtv was The Greatest Romance Ever Sold...

So far Parade is kicking ATWIAD's ass. I know that album's an underdog but c'mon! Any other admirers out there?

I know everyone will agree. um, no they won't either. What Prince did in the 80s was just fine, he followed his own drummer, and he didn't follow trends, that's why those albums sound so DIFFERENT, and so good. ***************************************************

When I first saw this Thread I said No,I can't decide they are so Different, but now I am going to say "ATWIAD." It was so Radically Different from his earlier work and Experimental. Prince tried alot of different Instruments and sounds on that album. Listen Parade was no Slouch either. His Instrumentation and String work with Claire Fischer was Beautiful.

I know everyone will agree. I agre that if he followed PR up with SOTT after a 2 year wait then yes he would have been godhead. BUT! It tool ATWIAD and Parade for him otmake SOTT the way he did...he had to flex other m,uscles and work out before he delivered SOTT the way he did. I say "the way he did' because I think he had some songs already written years before that ended up on SOTT..it took ATWIAD and Parade to whip him into Primo shape to make SOTT. "Climb in my fur."

I love 'em both but ATWIAD was the album that made me sit up, take notice of the music and and really appreciate how talented Prince was (and still is of course). Listeners and critics were expecting Purple Rain part 2, and we got this sprawling, psychadelic offering which contains IMO, one of his best ballads, Condition Of The Heart and Raspberry Beret which is an ultimate pop song if ever there was one. The end of Temptation, where P gets admonished for "wanting U in the worst way", still makes me giggle. ATWIAD was such a radical departure from Purple Rain, it was THE album that made me look forward to the next Prince release. You just didn't know what was coming next. Exactly what I was thinking. ATWIAD for me.

Both albums deserve to be revered as classics. Considering just the albums themselves, I would give the edge to "Parade." Adding B-sides to the equation, however, evens things up.

I didn't like those Albums then nor now.too much Bad FLower Power IMHO.some Great things in there but I don't think anymore about those albums.i don't think those two Albums brought Him down overall.I think believe it or not"purple Rain"did.so much exposure&with the Album,Film&Tour¬hing will Ever top when a Artist reaches that kind of Buzz with the General Public again.too much Expectation¬hing will be allowed to breath with that type of High.I know everyone will agree. mistermaxxx

My favorite is Parade. I love this time in Prince's music.
I wish we could go back and live it over again. But I love the Ladder song and PP on ARTWIAD.

Both are no "not mainstream" when veeryone expected purple rain mark 2 and three...
Parade appealled to me much in the sense that there was a tour and also because of the stylish Prince that came at the time (like his dressed to the nines style) plus it is jazz flavored. ATWIAD is great also (with alot of classic song just check the concert everybody digs Pop life , the Ladder etc...) this album is more "unfocussed" musically... "Goodness will guide us when love is inside of us... The Force will be with you, always"

Love bofuvum, but since I haven't bought Parade on CD yet (I have it on vinyl) and have bought ATWIAD, I guess I like ATWIAD better.
The songs seem more complete, full for the most part.

Parade.
To me, it does what ATWIAD was trying to do, but much better. ATWIAD to me is a transition from Purple Rain to Parade, and doesn't do either very well IMO.

Around the world in a day!!!
18 yrs latter this album sounds fresh & new. It brings back so many great memories of friends long gone. Oh & the B-sides!!! My god "She's always in my hair"!!! Around will always be special to me.

Id choose Parade over ATWIAD, but I do love those b-sides. Lets not forget either that bewtween Purple Rain and ATWIAD prince recorded some amazing tracks with other artists. Pretty much all of The Family's album is fantastic, if hed included Mutiny, Screams of passion, Nothing Compares 2 U, River Runs Dry on ATWIAD , and also included some b-sides it would ahve been his best album perhaps.
My mini disc verion of this album is: ATWIAD Paisley Park Condition Of The Heart Screams Of Passion Raspberry Beret Mutiny America Hello Pop Life Nothing Compares 2 U She's Always In My Hair 4 The Tears In Your Eyes The Ladder Temptation (sorry to fans of tambourine, but this just doesnt cut it for me) Ive also thought that manic monday would have fitted on this album, perhaps if hed got wendy or lisa to sing it. Parade however is my favourite prince album. Nothing beats it. The fluency, the vibe, and finally some horns. Kiss, Mountains and Sometimes it snows in april are outstanding. G&B & Anotherlover...are just fantastic, and the opening sequence is the best opening to a prince album (actually no thats SOTT but anyway). I dont like to change this album cos i think its the perfect length, and tracklist, although In All My Dreams is too good to have not been released. Perhaps if that came as the last song, it would finish the album on a high note rather than a sombre one.
