me too. it feels more real. the 3121 version is so overwrought. and the kind of overwrought that Prince phones in.

nod

I love the vulnerability of the original version.

That said, the two versions are like halves of a whole, to me. My hunch is that the song was written about Manuela. The earlier version is about falling in love with her. The line, "I don't want to see you dance" is a reference to Mayte who, of course, was a dancer. There is tentativeness borne of pain there - not wanting to go there again because of the way the supposed "great love of his life" ended. That version just makes me ache because I sense his longing.

The 3121 version is the aftermath. He went ahead and fell in love with her anyway - and this is the bitter end to it all. The orchestration - like the love, itself - is fully formed here. Lush and ripe - the way fruit is, just before it starts to rot. The whole thing ends in a swirl of anger and bitterness - just like the relationship. The pain has come full circle.

Nice observations. And it may very well be why he released it twice (first time ever), at the times that he did. To me, the first version sounds like it was recorded in the wake of Emancipation. It's got a lot of similar sounding beats/synths/whatever. It could be from shortly after that as well, but it doesn't sound like Prince circa 2004 to me. Possibly from that supposed Madrid 2 Chicago album that we were supposed to get in 2002, but had been hearing about since late 1998/early 1999. That would definitely fit the timeline of when things were falling apart with him and Mayte, and supposedly Manuela was around then and they were getting close. Fits the contrasts you make between their roles in his life, the dancing bit, etc. And when it did come out in 2004, he was in the full bloom of his relationship with Mani. By 2006, when we heard the second version, it was over, and he'd been hurt again, by the person he'd originally turned to with the same lyric.

Very astute of you and something I hadn't really thought of. Either version of the song usually just kind of passes me by and I don't put a lot of thought into it.

I agree that Prince sounds great in this song. It's good epic Prince. Strong music and strong song.

the only complaint I had with the song is that it was too short. I really felt that it ends right when the momentum is at full throttle.

But that works. Prince thought the relationship was at full throttle - and got cut off at the knees.

To dance ...spirit free. Remember that elation, faint now, a distant ghostly joy ...to fly hmmm. To FLY...

naked feet on the summer grass, swept away on a waltz tide - to really dance, who would not want to if they knew.

But then, it's hard to dance to Jazz - door closed... its a private joke.

Or when the floor is crushed to stage with the static expectant -wanting ?
The packed-in 'punter' experience - heelgrind soul at the door there ain't the space.
Greasy business of that kinda place, that kind of people -
There's the back space behind the wall - ye dance there. Back slash agogo !
O2
"There's NO dancing here" - "get bck in ur seat I tell u or u'll be outa here"...
Can't dance, can't see- This is VIP!

And so a "golden circle" - Can U dance... if U want to ?

Dance... the lost heart art of the people. Of the dancer nothing remains.

Ahh

No... really... lets dance right here... make it funky and I will laugh now !

Hay - sorry to be so ambiguous.
Just some midnight ramblings on the joys of dance
( not drunk - unless u count hot chocolate) and on the last 17 years of experiences of trying to dance at Prince's concerts. Covering Wembley - London Apollo. Paisley Park, Rotterdam and O2 London amongst others. For a dancer it has been a disappointment as no one much is ever dancing and theres not the set up to do so. ( with the notible exception of the NPG tickets main stage show Rotterdam- maybe 2002 ish )

... and then I just question if the golden circle of the up and comming concerts will make it possible to dance ? I know its all slightly off topic -

The song "The Dance" in my opinion is one of reverse psychology - all the don'ts being do's=( if my black was white baby!! )...it is expressed with much feeling, and is compelling, clever, imploring and almost naked.
Beautifully executed - Prince at his vulnerable best.

I hope I have explained myself and will try to be more informative ( and on topic) with my posts in future. Not drunk Hollywood dove but maybe a lil bit crazy!

Thanks for the explanation. Interesting theory and actually those golden circle/concerts dancing things have been on my mind too. Have you been to a Prince concert where you could dance on grass yet? And uh..What do you mean with the "=( if my black was white baby!!)" I am rather jealous that you've seen him in NL. I live here and I haven't seen him here, yet. cool Welcome to the org.

The image of the song - "my black was white" = negatives turned to positives a little like a photograph negative - theres a lot of Black and White in Prince's photo's don't U think ?

Maybe this year - Prince will extend his tour into NL - and U will get a chance to shake Ur stuff. @ concerts I'v been to, I don't get it - he plays all this amazing funky music and everyone just stands there.
I can watch a band for only so long -and then I gotta move- mostly though its cos Ur either trapped by seats or some sercurity man is shoving everyone back into neat rows. It's a frustrating experience. I found that I have had to alter my expectations.

I know what you mean, when the org gets too negative you need to leave for a while. wink

The only concert I've been to so far was in 1990. I was far back, & there were seats yes. We did stand but when there are so many people the feeling is kind of lost. I'm also someone who just can't understand people, who can just stand and listen to funky music without moving eek

I'm going to the Belgian festival. No seats. I'm not looking forward to any pushing and shoving or drunk people, I hate paying for that lol God willing the weather will be good and there'll be large screens and a little space somewhere to have a metre square around me, so we can dance of course! cool Though I really need at least 4! razz

I have no expectations at this stage. I'm glad it's going to be outside, some kind of freedom. I'll need to think about your black/white photograph negative idea. It's an interesting one.

I couldn't figure that out either confuse

When I'd be able to go see Prince I learned to 'black' out all the people that just stood there. They didn't dance or move, just hung out and stared, still I didn't let it get me down. Instead I'd tune in to and turn on to that 'white' light coming from the fantastic sounds of Prince & his band headbang sun

Prince music is magical and amazing imo, so when surrounded by the sounds I dance like crazy. I'm sure I look like a fool, but feeling that music is like drinking liquid heart and wanting the best of times for everyone yay! guitar dancing jig
