Prince versions vs those he gave the songs to

ok, if you had to choose songs to go on a definitive box set that wasn't "hits" oriented and one disc was to feature songs prince wrote for other artists but there are also versions of HIM doing the songs, which would you prefer? of course HIS versions would be "cleaned up" from their existing bootleg formats. Case in point, P's 11 min. version of The Dance Electric would sound GREAT cleaned up for such a set.

Nothing Compares to You - Sinead over Rosie & Prince's (feels more haunting)
Shhhh - Tevin over Prince's (sounds less "forced)
Love Thy Will Be Done - Martika's version
100 MPH - Mazarati's version (haven't heard a "clean" P copy)

Other essentials to include (no known Prince versions; at least not that I know of))
Manic Monday - The Bangles
Jaguar - Mavis Staples
Gigolos Get Lonely Too - The Time
The Glamourous Life - Sheila E.
Nasty Girl - Vanity Six
Sex Shooter - Appollonia Six

Dig more. There's the A6 demo of that song circulating.

The song is a good pop song. Nothing wrong with it.

The demo is basically the same thing you hear on The Bangles version, albeit with a few added embellishments from the band. In fact, if you listen to The Bangles version hard enough, you can hear Brenda in the background. Her raspy voice is very distinctive and noticeable under The Bangles. The demo that's out is not as quite as great quality as the released version obviously, but it's the same basic track.

The song was originally intended for Apollonia 6's album (as was "Take Me With U", "17 Days", "The Glamorous Life").

yeah, i need to dig deeper. my main source is no longer, but thanks for the info. you're quite encyclopedic. thanks. i was aware of those others songs' intended destination, interesting huh. but Brenda can be heard underneath the Bangles hmm.

I'd like to hear the version of Kiss that he gave to Mazarati before they livened it up and he took it back.
I've heard a version (on The Work i think) that was played with accoustic guitar and had a kind of bluesy feel to it but I since heard that that was a fake.
Or is it?
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

There's also a live version from a Parade concert in Holland with Wendy singing. The boot is called Manic Monday.

Sheena Easton recorded "Jaguar" but it was ultimately rejected by her or her record company.

Sorry but IMO The Time did a wayyyyy better job on Gigolos than Prince. I also like Patti's version of Yo Mister better than Prince's and Chaka's version of I Feel For You is better also.

Martika's version of "Love thy will be done" with Rahsaan Patterson on the back is better than the original one.

eek

Dont b a fam!

Musically they are virtually the same, the Mazarati version is just fine polished and professionally mastered.

the guitar licks thrown in on the Mazarati version are off the hook.

I actually dig Kid Creole's verion of 'The Sex of It' better than the P version, it has the hilarious "uhhhh....scuse me, but do you think you could cover your...outer extremities, as I am expecting some people to come over to the house....gimme gimme gimme OW!"
Prince's is a little nastier (he says 'bitch' not witch') but I just think the bonus voice over bits push Kid Creole ahead slightly.
Take it - like Clarence said:

It's Prince vocals - as (I think) the question is whether he's done it himself. And it's also much better than the earlier Hot Wit U
