P will never do an album of covers for one reason. That is because of the cost. He has to pay the songwriter royalties up front. That factor alone will keep him from releasing a full album of covers.

while other songwriters will get the royalties, they aren't paid up front. they're paid as any other songwriting royalty is paid.

I thought u had 2 pay a fee up front based on the amount of records u r projected to sell then u get paid songwriting royalties?

I actually love most of his covers. Crimson & Clover, Betcha By Golly Wow, La La La Means I Love You, One Of Us etc and I enjoyed Creep and his Foo Fighters cover as well.

At least it would be something different.

I don't think I'd buy it. Of all those songs, I only like Crimson and Clover. Kiss was also good of course.

What songs are you guys thinking about that he should cover? Please no more Elvis!

They're not all like that. They can be tastefully done. These are all excellent cover albums, which are every bit as artistic and creative as anything else from their back catalogues:

No you're right, there are always exceptions to the rule. I honestly like some covers, for the reasons you stated. BUT the majority of the time, its done for monetary reasons, nothing more and they are piss poor cover version that do NOT do the original justice.

Isn't a cover, a song of someone else's?

What he does in a live show is one thing, but releasing a whole covers album would be a pretty bold move and would certainly surpise me.

You guys would bitch no matter what he did.

i dunno who u guys r but im ok with almost anything he does musically, just not a fan of his covers.

i think if he where to get a little personal in his music that would be more of a bold move considering he's so private, most of his stuff now is about flash.

If he had to, or he prob already has a triple album's worth of covers in "His Vault" I'd like Prince to record;

Mr Bojangles. (various)
Love Wars (Womack and Womack)
Games People Play (Detroit Spinners)
God Only Knows (Beach Boys)
Moonlight Shadow (Mike Oldfield)
Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) : He'd never do Comfortably Numb with its drugs influence.
I.G.Y. (Donald Fagen)
You Wreck Me (Tom Petty)
Interstate Love Song (Stone Temple Pilots)
Humdrum (Peter Gabriel)
Hey Pocky Way (The Meters)
Mr Jones (Counting Crows)
Mmmm mmmm mmmm (Crash Test Dummies)
No Rain (Blind Melon)
Same Old Scene (Roxy Music)
Resurrection Shuffle (Ashton, Gardner, Dyke)
Fat Man In The Bath Tub (Little Feat)
Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime (The Korgis)
Scatterlings Of Africa (Johnny Clegg)
Dance Hall Days (Wang Chung)
Lean On Me (Red Box 1986)
Suspended In Gaffa (Kate Bush)

It's prob ooooold news in this forum, but Prince does a nice guitar solo on stage for "Whilst My Guitar Gently Weeps" with Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne for the George Harrison Hall of Fame.

Reminds me of what Paul McCartney said when he came up with "Yesterday" the tune was so familiar, it had to be a cover. Someone even had an argument with me in a pub that Tom Jones wrote "Kiss" with Art of Noise.

I always thought Prince did it first. Then I came to the org and someone linked to a Tom Jones yt version and I saw that TJ did it first. One genre I don't listen to is country. Now I'm unsure as to who did it first eek

No he shouldn't re-cover it. I thought they wanted new "cover" songs for a cd & I said, Kiss and Crimson & Clover were nice so yeah why not. But now I re-read, it's a cd of only covers done already.

I change my opinion then. Urgg...no thanks. Just give me a Prince cd. Pure from the roots. A cover now and then is ok. But not a whole cd.

Read the Wikipedia page on the song Kiss.

Prince released his version in 86. Art of Noise and Tom Jones didn't release theirs until 88.

Many thanks. Silly me. Well Tom Jones ruined it cool
It's amazing how many songs Prince gives away.
