Hello all,

I think we all agree that Prince has covered many musical genres, but one thing that makes me curious is whether he has sounded close to indie music.

Off the top of my head, I can think of only a few songs that have an indie flavour:

Annie Christian
Come

Anyone got any other suggestions?

Mmm...

I could erasily imagine Coldplay covering "If I Was Your Girlfriend".

There's a Belgian indie-band called Millionaire who have a song called "Come With You" which sounds A LOT like IIWYG. There's weird strings at the beginning, chicken grease, squelchy synths and almost the same hypnotising drum loops.

There other stuff is pretty cool too but "Come With You" is most Prince-esque.

Belgium band SOULWAX (groovy band) have covered Starfish And Coffee. The both brothers fronting the band are big Prince fanatics and even interviewed him on his European promo tour for Rave.
Prince should get closer to indie though; I wanna hear him do The Cure and Tricky songs.

i must admit soulwax are a class band-but indie music is godam crappy. Period.

It really depends what you mean by "indie music".
As far as I'm aware, the term indie is generally used to denote releases by means of an independent record label.

Following that rationale, did Prince score his first ever UK number one with an "indie" record (in the shape of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The world").

But I gather you are referring more to records with a grungy type of sound, lacking the studio sheen of most chart fodder. In that case I would recommend you check out "The Undertaker", which is a very unpolished record that was recorded straight onto DAT, with a minimum of fuss, therefore retaining that "grungy" ambience.

Speaking of independent releases, the last issue of MUZIK magazine carried a free CD containing a very eerie cover version of "Dirty Mind" by Bent, a record so odd that just begs to be heard.
