What happened to Uptown magazine?

I've had a rough few years financially, and my attention has been focused on other things than Prince fandom for a while. I haven't been keeping up with other Prince stuff than the official releases and haven't been active on the .Org other than reading the news feed. One thing I really, really enjoyed "back in the day" was the Uptown magazine -- heck, I even wrote a piece for them about Prince comic books once -- and the books by Per Nielsen.

I kept thinking that one of these days I'm gonna order the entire backlog of stuff that I missed -- Uptown magazines and The Vault. But last year, when opportnuity finally arose, I found that the www.uptown.se URL had been discontinued. Does anyone know if there still is a way to get hold of these books and magazines? Did someone buy the stock?

Please help, any info is appreciated.

Doing some garage cleaning and found my copy also. I also have a 2nd comic with Prince on the cover as well.

Pretty sure they got sued over the discussion, and supposed promotion, of bootleg releases... then probably use of the symbol logo and pictures too.

Don't we have short memories! LOL

Oh, they did get sued for the use of the symbol logo among other things, but it all ended in a settlement where Uptown promised not to reprint any of the bootleg issues. But the magazine existed for several years after this lawsuit.

they converted to a book format with The Vault and were going to issue quarterly or yearly updates after that, but nothing has come of it since the publication of The Vault

We closed down Uptown because we lost interest and I went on to becoming a researcher. I still have a lot of copies left in storage, so fans can get in touch with me if they're interested in issues of Uptown.

Hey Per. Would like to take this opportunity to ask you - will you be writing (or have you begun to write) the follow up to DMSR, to cover the second decade?

Much props to you - your book is the absolute definitive source on all things Prince, at least up to 1988 anyway.

I'm more curious about what kind of researcher you became...

I'm not going to do another edition of The Vault. Would require far too much work... Also, I simply do not feel excited enough about Prince's work the last 10-15 years... There also won't be a DMSR pt 2, simply because I've already covered the part of Prince's career that was truly exciting! Sorry if this info disappoints some of you.

My research concerns lifestyle issues, in the health field. Am an Associate Professor in Community Medicine. It's exciting and I enjoy it! Began research in 2004, when I put out The Vault. Got my PhD in 2006, presented a dissertation thesis on injury prevention.

Per,

I wish you the best and would like to thank you for the wonderful books and years of research.

I can clearly remember shopping in HS and finding Prince a documentary and hand writing the notes on the bootlegs and taking it with me to revolver records in NYC.

DMSR was also a first day purchase for me, as well as a sub to uptown.se..

Your knowledge, effort. and ability to critique prince's work has been the fundamental scholarly work on him.

Many thanks!@

Congratulations on your work! Disappointed there won't be another Vault, but I appreciate all the work you and the Uptown staff did over the years. Would it be possible to re-print the previous edition? or perhaps a downloadable PDF version? judging by the prices going for it on ebay and other places, there is definitely a demand biggrin
