The People Vs. Prince

I was reading an article this morning about George Lucas and his relationship with the Star Wars fan base. Someone is making a documentary called The People vs. George Lucas that contains fans saying everything from "I owe George a lot," while another swoons, "The man unlocked a generation's imagination." Then comes this condemnation: "A lot of people view George Lucas as the antichrist."

This part of the article made me instantly think of Prince and his fan/fam base, "That passion (both the good and the bad) is showcased in (Alexandre) Philippe's documentary, which created ample buzz at South by Southwest. "The People vs. George Lucas" explores this strange, conflicted relationship that exists between the reclusive "Star Wars" creator and his most ardent adult fans."

And in the last paragraph, you just have to replace "George Lucas" with "Prince" and "studios and research" with "record labels and fans": "You have to understand how George Lucas works, and I've been working with him for 30 years," Roffman said. "He's driven by his own personal vision. He believes in the integrity of that, and he doesn't believe in letting outside forces like studios and research interfere with the story he wants to tell."

If done objectively and not biased in either way, I think it would be interesting to see something like this done for P and his love/hate bunch.

7souls,

I agree that it could be interesting, more so to hear stories from people who have worked with Prince. I mean - the Kevin Smith interview about working with Prince is classic!!! It might even be nice to hear about other artists who have been influenced by P musically. What would be a great idea, if this ever came to fruition,is to include some of the more vocal orgers in the documentary. I'd love to be able to see some of my fave orgers in action! (Yup - I'm talking about Ernest, The Dance, zaza, SquirrelGrease, and many others who have great posts IMO.)

I'd pay $7.77 to watch it at the theaters! And I don't even care if I get my free t-shirt or not!

Given the fact that the general public neither knows nor cares about any of this, I think it'd just end up being an exercise in mutual masturbation.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't know of any documentaries that are marketed with the intent that all in the general public are going to know or care about the subject matter.

Hey, if you want to spend a crapload of money to make a documentary on a subject only a few people care about, knock yourself out. shrug

If you can get someone else to bankroll a documentary about Prince's fans bitching about him, I will stand in awe. lol

Genesia, I would be more concerned of the opposite happening - all of Prince's fans would just be gushing about how wonderful and brilliant he is! It would take a lot more nerve to stand in front of a camera and bitch about Prince than it does under the relative anonymity of prince.org!

Since this is a "what if" thread, the ideal would be an intelligent mix of lovers and haters, plus some behind the scenes folks who can give us a picture of what the man is really like.

Again, if you frequent the org, you've heard that "intelligent mix" ( falloff ) already - for free. Anyone who doesn't, isn't going to care. shrug
