Have You Ever been Fury(ous)

Fury Lyrics
Artist: Prince (Buy Prince CDs)
Album: 3121

... U must have heard he got another band
They're makin' money, they're makin' plans
U feel left out, but u need 2 understand
Word on the street - he's still ur man
(he's still ur man)

...2 sides 2 every story
One man's gloom is another man's glory
Sun 2 a shadow, rose 2 a thorn
Ain't no fury like a woman scorned
Ain't no fury like a woman scorned
No fury like a woman scorned

I was listening to 3121 today and couldn't help remembering when I heard Fury for the first time...thought Prince was looking in on me and the fresh break up between my Ex and I. lol

The two stanzas above hit home particularly hard because I felt my Ex was all about the $ and missed the true nature of our love and eventhough we split, I remained "true" to myself (even though it looked as if I was remaining "true" to him.)

But as it's said and done, Ain't no fury like a woman scorned... is this true? Women, do you find this to be true? Or is Prince simply enforcing stereotypes about women?

Guys, what's your take on the fury thing? Did Prince hit the nail on the head with this song lyrically?

Does the music match the sentiment of the song? The guitar work sounds like the guitar is screaming in pain is this purposeful? And the screams at the end, is that how guys feel after they've been "through the ringer?" lol At the end he's out of breath!

Any1 who is all about $ doesn't love u. The stereotype question is almost ridiculous in my opinion.

Well, I agree about the $ thing. Why do you think the stereotype quesion is ridiculous? Please explain yourself.

Also what has you're experience been as regards comparison to the song's sentiments?

um yeah totally i had to chuckle when that song came out ... my experience with women is quite like the song in that they become a bit vicious if there is anything critical to be said ... i like the band references as well because usually a musician gets side tracked by relationships so when its over, its back to business and any success just pisses the ex off more

one of his better tunes in the last 15 years smile

It's a good song. I don't really know what he's talking about in most of the song, but I agree with the "ain't no fury like a woman scorned" part. Shoot, I'm gay and even so I've seen my share of pissed-off women. I think straight dudes would do well to watch out! biggrin

O.k., not to single out or put gay people on "blast" but, I've heard some stories about break-ups with gay friends that would make anyone scuuured....???

Huh? Question goes for you too.\\//

i dont think the music matched the sentiment in that the record version is a little lite ... to me its a very free ing song and he is almost laughing at how rediculous women can be but hes not caught up in the drama of her happiness or mood anymore, he is just free and rockin out with the band not giving a fuck .. he still loves her but he is mature enough to realize that she is just not able or willing to meet him halfway and hes been thru it all before ... so the snl version i think was a lot better and all in all the music works better in that full on release mode instead of the more conservative mix on the record

Do you mean when a gay guy and a female fight or end their friendship? I have a lot of female friends, and we've had our occasional fights. And they're a gigantic pain in the butt. But I've never had anything that resulted in a "breakup" per se.

I agree the live version is stronger musically.

i mean break ups between gay partners...those can be sometimes just as tenuous, yes?

Oh, I see. Yeah, I guess so, but I like keeping the allusion to the Furies here. It's not just about breakups. It's about girl power. biggrin

Furies were female, so the line that inspired the cliche that Prince's song is based on ("Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned/Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned") is saying that a pissed-off woman is worse than a Fury. I know it applies to all people and all relationships, but it's kind of warning everyone to watch out for a woman who's been scorned--they're more badass than anything else. lol

Sun 2 a shadow, rose 2 a thorn

I always thought this anology was interesting because I would typically describe the circumstance of breakup as someone being a "thorn to a rose" or "shadow to the sun," No?

Something to prove? Revenge? Rejection? Self-Actualization?

Have you ever seen you Ex and they look better/worse; are you mad/glad... or does it even matter?

I think the rule of thumb is to look as good as you can and make them miss ya! ha, ha,

I think he's singing from the perspective of a third party and deffinately giving advice.

I really like the song but was furious (not really just kidding) that it didn't actually have enough fury in it - was a bit bland - needed some smoking guitar screetching I felt
