Cause and Effect III...

You know the drill by now...
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

The fact that there's three threads on here for a song that most people hate is pretty funny. Guess a lot of folks really like expressing some hate up in this piece.

I don't hate it. I hate the lyrics, but the music is swell.

This is a great new Prince song and I love the production as well as all the different segments, despite what other people say.

I think that I'm so hard up for a new Prince album that I'll over analyze any new song that Prince puts out! falloff

Anyway, here’s my take on Cause & Effect. After many listens, I still don't like the song. My main concern is that I feel Prince has "retired" in a sense that he does not feel the need to compete or challenge himself in the music industry anymore, therefore his lyrical output has become transparent and void of any real substance. In other words, he has become a prophet and no longer feels the need for any guidance from any man for his fulfillment and happiness. "I am here, where are you?" reads more like a statement that he knows who he is and where he's going. He believes he will make it to "the promise land" and ‘we” are the ones on the other side of the mirror, seeking knowledge and the truth.

It seems that he has already done "the work" to get to a place of euphoria, and is not looking to help anyone else get there.
In the past he had something to prove, something to say because "we" were going through the metamorphosis of life together. In C&E, I don't get the feeling that "we" are a part of this ride anymore. No more "getting on the boat" - if you want to get to a place of euphoria you must get there on your own.
This song is more introspective than the recent songs he has released. There is no more dialogue between speaker and listener in C&E - only monologue and the epilogue.

its a grower. i think its VERY different for him which to me is indicative of NOT being complacent or "retiring" but showing us another style in his arsenal. he's NOT predictable which is always refreshing. i think songs that are DIFFERENT, or not RADIO FRIENDLY HITS doesn't mean they're BAD. its INTERESTING to me which is an element i like in my music.

I think you'll find as many people if not more dig it, there's not many claiming it to be a masterpiece but the generally vibe I'm getting from fans is it's a grower and a pretty cool Prince song.

if u say so. I hope u`re right! I love the song but since the very 1st post from the1st thread it was pretty ugly up n here. It does seem to have grown on folks over time though.

I have to say i was underwhelmed initially. However, i have to say it's grown on me! Not predictable. A potetial single for mass consumption- possibly not - but enough interest to look forward to the next album.

However, A Box Of Chocolates is another story. I am in LOVE with that release

It's probably not a single or hit, but a fine song. Good opener on a typical Prince album. Joyful and fast! In general, I liked Lotusflow3r and if this song had been on that project it would have been one of the highlights. If this is the first candy from a new album, I'm kinda excited...

After multiple listens, I still like the song. The heavy, dark and then fast parts of the song are the best. Perfect for dancing. One can really let rip and be creative. The cool down and accoustic part are also both catchy and danceable.

I'm not fond of the chorus though. It's a little simplistic "sing & bop along" & doesn't do justice to the song as a whole. The ch is a little along the $ theme, which was playful once you got into it because in $ the them was consistent throughout, so once accepted, easy to get into to.

If I were Prince, I'd revise the chorus & spice/sprice it up. The lyrics in the chorus seem to be the core message and it should be the easier part to remember for later humming. But maybe it'd be more effective if was put into a really slow melody like the accoustic part or the opposite and embedded into he gorgeous dark hard speedy part.

I like the lyrics. Whether Prince sings about Nikki or God, sex or compassion it's the music that hooks the ear. The part "but if you stamp your passport" reminds me of "sign your name on the dotted line."

An interesting song with many different elements worthy of discussion.
When one thinks of how each artist must start with a blank page and create every sound and word to fit together...producing the effect of every cause...driving them, it's amazing how much music is inside of Prince.

Interesting take Bohemian - I agree there are certainly elements that work real well and point towards quite an exciting potential opener to any new album P. might be working on.

I have it on my ipod for the gym - this given that I was someone who dismissed this pretty quickly on first few listens.

The track works on some levels for me - the guitar is killer.

I love the new song. I think people who do not even write or play an instrument can't begin to understand the changes that a man like Prince has gone through. Perhaps he has evolved into a place that the folks who liked 1999 could never get to. The song is catchy and expresses all the different styles that Prince has mastered over the years.
