This place is going crazy. You now cannot

a, criticise
b, post another singer's criticism
c, have your own opinion

without people kicking the theread's door in like Gene Hunt, defending every single nutjob decision/lawsuit/ice-cream-van-jingle that Prince makes.

I'm seriously tired of arguing the right to having an opinion that differs from 'everything Prince has ever done is just as good as everything else he's ever done, ever'.

From now on, it's sarky punchlines and anagram threads all the way, screw attempting an actual conversation, it never goes anywhere. lol

No. You want to post your opinion and then don´t want anyone to criticise your opinion. That´s rather weird if you post criticism about Prince on a website dedicated to Prince. confused
[Edited 3/24/10 4:35am]

wrong. Reread this thread. See who started the 'them and us' tired debate.

Oh and so you're saying that because this is a website dedicated to Prince that no criticism should be made about him?? Seriously??

This isn't the NPGMC forums. Independent and unnoficial... wink

edit. missed a word out. haha

I think opinions are important, but Goldfrapp's opinions holds very little relevance to me. Most of all b/c she's missing out on some of the greatest Prince albums out there plus she's not my taste of tunes. She's got a couple of decent tracks that how many people her help her produce? Now, you wanna have somebody like Stevie Wonder, Jay Z, or any other artist that can stand on their two feet w/o a studio full of producers, bring it on. Thanks for the report though, it is always interesting to see what other artists take on Prince is, negative or positive. wink

God, you and your numbers. All you've really managed to say in response to my counter claims is that you can't really compare. Um, ok. What is your argument exactly? Prince sells more than Goldfrapp, therefore...? What's your point? You've lost me.

My argument is very simple:

You have been wrong!

can you be a bit more vague please?

There's something wrong with that website. whofarted

firstly, you appear to be able to buy things from it.
Secondly, it appears to have up-to-date news and release/tour info
And Thirdly, I didn't have to pay $77 to access it.

I haven't read all of the responses, but, isn't this thread pretty stupid and meaningless? I mean, she states, literally, that she used to listen to Prince, and like him when he was "very disco and seventies."

I really don't think this parallels any of the Prince fans on this site. The comparison of "us" to Alison Goldfrapp is fairly erroneous, especially if the OP's point was to say that like us, there are musicians out there that liked his older output as opposed to his current.

I would take any opinion like this and ask myself how musically diverse she is. I mean, if Prince came out with a masterful jazz opus, would her opinion still matter? It'd be even more meaningless.

Do you have those expectations about any of your favourite artists or bands?

Alison: I stopped listening to Prince because I thought, "Oh God, no. I just want it to be like the old days!' I just loved him when I was a teenager and stuff. I was just utterly obsessed with him.

What was the first Prince album you got into?

Alison: It was actually the first one. It was very disco and seventies. I loved that.

ta, dah!!

No it's just you or the "us" you're referring to. Alison unlike most orgers just stopped listening when she no longer felt the need to. She didn't create hundreds of threads about her 'no longer listening', 'why she's can no longer listen' and 'why can't it be like it used to be'. She did what most of the other "us"('s) wish you of the former "us" wish you'd do and just stop when it no longer suits you.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

You see but that's the beauty of music. I like Goldfrapp and am looking forward to buying the new disc but I don't feel the need to compare everyone to Prince artistically/creatively/religiously/politically or in any other sense. Unless that artist is comparing themselves to Prince thereby opening themselves to an opinion. I have over 9,000 songs in my iPod and at least 6,700 of them have absolutely nothing to do with Prince or beg for a comparison to him. I simply love music. Prince is the greatest musician in my eyes but he's hardly the be all and end all of the musical universe.

No, not at all. Listen and enjoy. But stop listening to NEW output which seems to put so many out of joint and gives them all something more to complain about.

What i mean is, for those who are no long happy with Prince's output, trust your own judgement/perceptions and stop banging your head against a brick wall.

To keep listening and keep hating it is just putting oneself into a victim role. And the latter I don't mean "YOU" I mean people generally.(Because I think you liked LF cds).

There is surely so much more to do in life and to enjoy than to continually punish oneself with something they don't like.

Just a thought.

It's not a punishment to listen to music and be disappointed. It's a punishment to PAY for that music. I won't pay a cent into greedy rip-offs pockets until he apologizes and comes correct! biggrin

It's more complicated than that though. I really WANT his new stuff to be interesting, good quality stuff. I'm not harking back to Purple Rain, in fact, it's definitely not my favourite era and I can simply listen to outtakes to get more of that sound.

I just want him to be good now. You're right, I did like Lotusflower (the album), and with a few edits, it now ranks in my top 10 Prince albums, so it's not as though I'm a hater.

In fact, I was quite happy being a 'I like Prince, but I wish he'd get his spark back' sort of guy, quietly bimbling along until I mentioned it on here one day and had a tirade of posts along the lines of 'you're a hater', 'your perceptions of music have changed' (?!), 'you're not a fan', etc...

to be honest, I wasn't that bothered before, but ever since, when I have mentioned I dislike something, whilst stating I like something else, the same old tired things get bandied about to the point where 'fams' (and I'm not including you in this, as you are a reasonable individual) have chipped away at my opinions so much that they've actually made me dig my heals in more and become an anti-fam.

Anyway, who cares? I like some stuff, you like other stuff... we still like the ssame guy, right?

Look who cares I don't have to hear her music to know she's not better than Prince. Plus this is a Prince fansite, I thought we were supposed to support him. If he's making the same level of music he was making in the 80s then he's not growing as an artist. He's very underrated nowadays, and my approac is not juvenile its the truth
