The Bootleg Ephiphany

Box o' Chocolates has got quite a reaction here. In fact, I didn't know it existed until I read it here. The combination of that set of song snippets (Traffic Jam, Everybody wants what they dont got, etc) and Box o' Chocolates brought up some questions.

Some think Prince is behind it. I don't. I've read about the group of "private collectors" who have been sitting on stuff, which at first frustrated me, but now I think I understand. Something like Box O' Chocolates couldn't be released in any other way, otherwise someone would try to profit from it. It's almost like this "group" was waiting for the technology to get to the point that they could actually share these tracks for free.

The next thought that I had was "What else are they sitting on?". My mind raced with the thought of even more unreleased gems, and while I'm sure that's the case, Box o' Chocolates reveals something that I hadn't considered up to this point: Every bootleg that I've listened to in crappy quality for years comes from a low gen tape. It sounds crappy because of the copy of a copy thing happening. This means that someone has the real copy, the source.

There's a possibility that ALL the unreleased tracks that have been circulating will come out in very clear quality. They all came from clean sounding tapes originally right? I doubt Prince, his engineers, band members or girlfriends ever listened to these tracks sounding all muddy.

What do you think?

I think you could have added this to the box o chocolate's thread, instead of starting a new one.

Yes, the copy of a copy thing was obviously happening for years. Now, once something gets leaked it can go viral. Everything will probably come out crystal clear one day unless Prince destroys his own work. He either leaves it to the next generation or willfully destroys stuff that hasn't leaked (I mean unless we believe he'll live forever!), but another important question is, how much do we have stuff built up in our minds because of fifth generation tapes. would you really lsiten to 'the ball' every day over eye know if it came out in pristine quality? Perhaps the novelty would wear off. There was a certain appeal to the treasured copied tape...
Got my mojo working...it just don't work on you!
