Perhaps he said no. It doesn't seem like the kind of thing he would do.

If Prince ever had a deal with Pepsi, it would've been known as one of the sexiest beverage 2 drink, for get coca cola. Anways, does anybody know why this deal was never made? I,m pretty sure he has had a deal with Pepsi when they gave sponsorship for the Act II tour.ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. |

I was just thinking at the height of his commercial days, it seem like it would've been a cool deal... especailly around the time when raspeberry baret became a single... i can really see it, the pepsi commercial would've been like that cartoon prt of the video, wendy and lisa playing there insturments along with the band, prince riding his motor cyle with a pepsi in his hand. then the music of raspeberret plays in the background. I think it would've been cool.

I would say sponsership and commercials are certainly different kind of deals though. But everyone knows that Prince orignially turned down a huge contract to do Coke commercials right when Michael had signed with Pepsi.

Because Prince wasn't a corporate whore sellout. Well, at least back then.

Prince has had sponsorship on his tours from corporations like Pepsi. They help to underwrite the cost of the tour (all that equipment and travel get expensive) and receive publicity and usually a cut of the box office in return.
Prince has not, to my knowledge, ever served as spokesperson for or endorsed a product. He does not even do endorsements for musical instruments and equipment he uses on stage and in studio and hasn't even discussed the gear he uses in interviews very much. I'm sure he's had plenty of offers and opportunity, but has apparently chosen not to accept for his own reasons. I remember him mentioning in an interview that the Prince spaghetti company did an ad with a little jar of spaghetti sauce dancing around on a stage with a purple trench coat on. He thought it was kinda cute, but they never purchased rights to do it and his lawyers made them yank it from ciculation. I have to say that I'm glad he hasn't done something like a Pepsi commercial. But can you think of products he would be a good fit for? Maybe Trojan condoms? I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

There was the Chevy commercials from this year where Prince let them use the footage of him singing Little Red Corvette from Sign O' the Times. So he has endorsed Chevrolet.

There is controversy, but I believe that he wrote this song AFTER the commercial came out just using the refrain as the song is different.

I never saw the Chevy commercials. That's interesting. I wonder, though, if he approved that since the masters would belong to Warner? Or do they only own the studio master tape and not the concert footage? I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

It was discussed in detail when the commercials starting airing , but Warners does not own the Sign O' the Times movie. WB didn't want it so the distribution rights are owned by Odeon and Universal has the Home Video rights. Check your box and you won't see Warner Brothers anywhere on it. Prince definately gave his okay on this one as he asked people what they thought about him doing it.

There is controversy, but I believe that he wrote this song AFTER the commercial came out just using the refrain as the song is different. You are right about the Act II tour - it was Coce-Cola, not Pepsi. Uptown also reports in Turn It Up 2.0 of a song called Coca-Cola having been filed at the Libarry of Congress which it had been assumed was composed as a potential tie in with a deal, but there is no verification of this specific commercial link. I think you are correct about the Diet Pepsi commercial emerging first and Prince incorporating the Ray Charles chorus in his own composition, 'Uh Huh.' ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice.
