I have been listening to Prince since I was nine (1989), and I really do respect his work and think that he is one of the greatest musician of all time. When I went to the "One Night Alone" concert in London, Prince had a little speech, before he went to his classic music. He said: "Everyday when I wake up, I turn on the radio and see whats on. And thats not musuc anymore. Back in the days we had James Brown, Temptations, etc. Shall we play some classic radio music to you guys." And the audience screamed that they really wanted it, and the first song Prince played was Respberry Beret.
The problem today is that a lot of people dont know what music is all a about anymore. Three years ago, I asked a friend of minewho he likes best, Prince or Michael Jackson. His answer was Michael Jackson. My next quetion was, WHY? Because he is the king of pop. BULLSHIT. Prince realeses every year one or two new ALBUMS. How many solo albums does JACKO have,...6. And besides that, Jacko is really copying Prince all the time. Most of the people do not see it, but I think Jacko has been always jealouss of Prince, and he always tries to stay on the top of Prince, to be the best. And guess how Prince feels about that, he doesnt give fuck, cuz he is sorted.
Jacko did present some good songs, nothing against that, but there is onew problem about him, during his carreer, he was too obssessed of himself, and thats what I don't like.
Another think perince said in "ONA" concert in London, was: "Iam sure b 4 u guys came here, u told all ur friends and relatives whre u r going 2 nite, WHAT, UR GOING 2 C PRINCE, UHHH , HOW COULD U.
But I dont care what my friends say about Prince.

One thing that I've observed;

Back in the day, Prince was considered shocking, unconventional and ever-so-slightly bizarre. MJ was considered very wholesome and pure.
Now, it's MJ who's considered shocking, unconventional and ever-so-COMPLETELY bizarre (although for different reasons than Prince) and Prince himself has become quite wholesome and pure.

Or perhaps it's just me who thinks like this.

OK, this is a really difficult subject whether closed minded individuals see it or not. First of all understand that I spend vast amounts of time defending Prince and his unorthodox antics to Michael fans and vice versa.

I think it is really important to understand that Mike and Prince are so different in so many ways that it is just not fair to compare them directly. Yes, certain statements such as 'Sign O The Times pisses all over Bad' are true, just as 'HIStory is an infinitely stronger comeback and career crossroads album than Emancipation was' is also true. But to get bogged down in petty little arguements that hinge on personal taste is to miss the point entirely.

Michael and Prince may keep an inquisitive eye on eachother and variously irritate and please eachother at different times but they have been brought up in different ways, led completely different lives, want different things and see music in different ways. Just because Michael is an entertainer at heart who is too easily pigeonholed as a 'pop' artist, whatever that means, wheras Prince plays, produces, conducts, arranges and whatever else does not make him any less worthy or credible an artist.

Whether ignorant fuckers like it or not, Michael has singlehandedly created some incredible pieces of ART in the last decade. He went thru hell and back in 93/94; the media and people he trusted tried to bury him for money and he came out the other side, walked into a recording studio alone and came out holding 'They Don't Care About Us', 'Childhood', 'Stranger In Moscow', 'Earthsong', and 'Little Susie'. Prince on the other hand, went thru some difficulties with Warner which cannot be compared to being accused of child molestation, and his answer was Emancipation. Yeah, it's a cool album, but u can hear that he's just trying so so very hard to write commercial hits and it's a bit embarassing with all the things he has said in interviews over the years, very hypoctitical. One minute he scoffs at Michael saying 'I hate videos, they're for kids', but as soon as his very livelyhood depends on the minimal airplay he can get for his albums on NPG Records, he's talking about how proud he is of 'Holy River' and 'The One' and 'Betcha By'. How ironic also that he has to supplment the album with classics by The Stylistics.

He also snapped at a guy for covering When Doves Cry recently although the song had been opened up to a whole new audience. But it seems it was OK for him to cover a song by Joan Osbourne only a few months old which was better than most of his own stuff.

More to the point, Emancipation betrayed Prince's creativity in a bit of a trough while being stretched over 3 discs. The Gold Exp, on the other hand, barely had enough room on the tape to contain all of the incredible sounds pouring from the man. Think how ironic that is, when he left Warner to do what he wanted.

Back to MJ, the point is, MJ's answer to years of abuse, stress, conspiracy, victimising and sheer hell, was to release some of the most brillaint, painfully honest, soul-baring music he could. Listen to the songs on the Blood remix album such as Is It Scary and Morphine. That is true creativity of the kind Prince showcases on The Truth, Gold and TRC. But please please please don't presume to call MJ the King of Pop when he is producing works of genius like Is It Scary while Prince is asking Gwen Stefani to give him a lift back into the charts on the dross that is So Far So Pleased and most of Rave.

Now I have a million and one criticisms of Michael Jackson, but as an informed fan of many years, they are very different criticisms to those of SammyDakid. Look at it this way. As 'in4med' hardcore Prince 'fams', we criticise him beacuse we paid $100 for one thing and got given another while recognising that his musical genius has been very much active for the past 18 months. The uninformed assume he has sunk without trace, hasn't released a song since 'Beautiful Girl' and maybe have an idea that he sells jazz on the internet. Now as an informed Michael Jackson fan, I criticise him for drawing corrupt leeches into his business life while I also understand that his latest album was a masterpiece deliberately destroyed by his record company. You, on the other hand, slag him off for baby-dangling and releasing a 'flop-album'. Comprendez-vous??

Some Prince fans are so friggin blind and hypocritical. They understand that the real Prince is so far removed from the media's view of him and that his music is as great as ever but are happy enough to swallow every last lie about a man who has been persecuted infinitely more than Prince.

For starting this thread with the title 'Wacko Jacko' I would actually like to batter your pig-ignorant face into the ground with a badger on the end of a spoon. Just how disgusting and moronic can people continue to be with regard to blind hate towards a man who has done nothing but tried to give music, escapism and LOVE to the world.

If all you know about MJ, his plastic surgery and the allegations made aginst him is the scraps on tv and in newspapers then it is the equivalent of reading Jonathan Margolis' latest review of 'His Purple Ponciness'forays into instrumentals and jazz' and taking it as godpel. Use your goddam brain and think about how friggin hypocritical that is.

I am sick of reading how crap Invincible supposedly was. First of all, for an album that took years to make, do u friggin think it's fair to dismiss it after a couple, maybe even just one listen?? Yes, it's a commercial 'pop' album but it has as much to do with Britney Spears as Noel Gallagher does with Motzart. Prince has tried to have commercial albums and tried to write hits. He has failed ever since 1994. It is embarrasing to listen to him on Discs one and two of Emancipation because all he wants is to have a hit. Remember the fisrt thing he said in that interview..."How many hits can you hear?". I'm sure he's embarassed he said that now, for more than one reason.

Then there's Rave. If u think for one second that 'Undisputed', Prince's answer to his critics, even comes close to the brilliance of MJ's 'Unbreakable, then you are truly delluding yourself. Opem your tiny mind and stop hating somebody you know less than nothing about.

Loads of Prince fans also jumped on the 'Bash MJ Bus' when he spoke out aginst Tommy Mottola last year. As far as you were concerned, MJ made a crap, flop of an album and publically blamed his record company. My blood is boiling just thinking about that. All i can say is Tommy Mottola has been forced to leave Sony, two years before his contract expires. You do the friggin maths.If you don't know anything about it, how can you make goddam judgements about what is going on? If u had paid Prince the same discortesy over his disputes with Warner, u wouldn't be here right now by definition.

Give Michael a goddam break. All he has evr evr done is sit in his 'corner' and try to create. He has never (until his album was destroyed), spoken out aginst anyone about anything. Think about that. He has had more SH*T thrown at him than any other celebrity ever and his response has been to make music, to sing and dance. That is a pretty amazing quality. Prince by comparison, has been a volatile, mean, angry and by his own admission, 'horrible' person at times.Nobody who has worked with Michael for any lenght of time has anything but very very nice things to say about him. There are enough people to talk about Prince's indiscretions and darker moments.

Let them do their own thing, don't compare their music and personalities. In their own way I think they respect and understand eachother by now so can we just do the same?

Actually,ummm... I think MJ has released 8 solo albums, not 6.

Hoinjsz...and what exactly do u base that on? Prince has always played aftershow clubs, it's his 'thing' he's had a fair bit of practice and we'd go along and enjoy it if he blayed the dijeredoo through his arse.

But if he played in a club of non believers and did his whole new direction thing, he would find it hard to get people on side.

Michael on the other hand, would clean up. I know this for a fact. Besides the fact that a group of random homo sapiens from the planet Earth will automatically give him a standing ovation if he enters a room of a few hundred of them, he is infinitely more of a stage presence than Prince from Wembley to the Duke of Wellington.
