GOLD NIGGA CD I was in my teenage years when "Soft and Wet" came out so I have always been aware of Princes' music since his commercial beginnings. I didn't start wanting to know about his life until the late, late 90's. The more I learn about him, the more I wonder about his "GOLD NIGGA" period. I haven't been able to find any information on what was going on w/ Prince in that time period. Can anyone tell me what was going on in his life when he was recording that CD and what was going on the first year or so after releasing that CD??? In particular, I'm interested in knowing what was Princes' actual relationship w/ Warner Bros like during the GOLD NIGGA period versus what was public knowledge and/or perception of Princes' relationship w/ Warner Bros. Thanks in advance.

Wow. That's a lot of info. Gold Nigga (If I remember correctly) came out around the :symbol: period. It was available at the NPG stores in Uptown and at the Mall of America (anyone else remember that store. lol.) It was under the nose of Warner, like, I think without the wide distrubution Warner didn't care. It didn't have Princes name on it anywhere, and none of his band was under Warner contract besides him. He was dating Carmen and Mayte had just entered the group. The Caren Electra record came out about this time also. . .
anyone else want to add?? anyone? anyone? Ferris?

I especially like towards the end of the cd where
someone says ~ "coming directly...from paisley" THEN, another voice says "watch your step, your slippin"... as to hide the fact of just who & where this artist is. If you have not heard this cd, do yourself a favor.. CHECK IT OUT! Fish

I agree "creepycornerman".
jtea4p, you may not realize it, but you're really asking a lot. But just to add to what "creepycornerman" was saying, if my memory serves me correctly, in general the GoldNigga period represents the beginning of a very dark and bitter period in terms of Prince's ever increasing anger towards Warner Bros. But GoldNigga itself I believe was simply an NPG side project and nothing more. I think that from a fan's perspective, the perception of what was going on at the time was really very weird because no one knew what was going to happen next. I think that at the time, there was still at least a little bit of belief that Prince and Warner Bros. would somehow work things out. But as it became more and more evident that Prince was not happy and that Warner Bros. was going to hold Prince to the terms of his contract, the big question was "How is Prine going to fulfill his contractual obligation?" "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"

I'm just asking cause I really don't know...to the question on fans minds at the time :how is Prince going to fulfill his contractual obligation?" Was that contract in question the last one he had w/ Warner Bros.? Too, THANK you folks for bringing me up to speed on this time period.

As far as we (the public) know, Yes, the reported $100 Million muli-cd/multi-year contract with Warner Bros. at or around the time of Diamonds and Pearls was the last contract. But having said that, a lot of legal wrangling over the issue of Prince's contract with WB really kept most of the public (including the fans) in the dark over exactly what was going on behind the scenes. For instance, even though I'm saying that was the last contract, for all I know, there could've been another contract written designed specifically to get Prince out of his then current contract at the time. From a fans point of view though, anything that you hear that is not from Prince or Prince's lawyers is really only speculation. Best to remember that time period as a time when Prince was desperately trying to get out of his contract and in general Prince seemed to be very unhappy for several years. "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"
