from a reliable source I heard this is true...also the aussie female guitarist (name escapes me right now) that was playing for MJ just before he died has recently been jamming at Paisley....I wonder if she's in the new line-up...or maybe Prince was just absorbing some talent...getting some new ideas....

You could tell Prince had a feel for those drum patterns, that he really cared about those early drum patterns because those early songs seem to be built around them, they were integral parts of the compositions, not tacked on afterthoughts. He put his soul into the machine and wanted those drum patterns to stand out and be appreciated. And they certainly have. It was the empty space between the beats, and the timing that made those beats so much fun to listen to over and over, bobbing your head like a crazy person and never getting tired of them. Listen to Erotic City, and as simple as the music deceivingly "seems" there is a whole lot of stuff going on all over it. Prince at that early age seemed to instinctively know the power of the negative space, the power of a sound left on its own or playing off something else, kinda like when a color like blue or red packs a bigger punch and is better appreciated when in contrast or harmony to something else, like a white background. The same thing was happening on his early jazzy efforts, that's why I absolutely adore the first madhouse album. Everything is snappy and crisp, I love how cool the drumming sounds on that record, everything is placed where you can really appreciate it, Eric's horns and the synths are not muddied by anything else. He had that knack like a good chef not to add too much salt unless he specifically wanted to melt snow, or too much garlic unless he specifically wanted to ward off vampires. Everything had such a perfect feel that never let anything get old or make the listener tired listening to it. His early records have held up amazingly well, feeling fresh and new after 20-something years. I like the way "Lotus" sounds, i think its a great record, but i do think the sound is too muddied. I was just enjoying listening to his live video version of "Love Bizzar" with Sheila, and noticed the same thing. As much as is going on with Sheila's band in conjunction with The Revolution, everything was orchestrated so perfectly. He let you savor things and even broke things down here and there because he was proud of certain elements going on that he wanted us to focus on them, appreciate and enjoy them as much as he was, such as the awesome rhythm guitar and sax sections. Everything flowed and lived naturally as part of a composition. Nothing ever felt forced. Notice how awesome the kid's drumming sounds on those youtubes all by himself, now imagine that same kid's drumming buried deep inside all sorts of distortions, guitars and whatnot's doing nothing to play off of or enjoy in a uninspired composition with forced lyrics.(Cause and Effect) It all gets muddied and becomes hard for a listener to appreciate anything, when all you hear is a painful wall of noise. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but too much of anything makes for a boring and tiresome listening experience where you cant appreciate any of the individual favors no matter how good they are. I listen to a lot of old jazz records, and you would never ever hear of anyone letting some awesome solo or player be buried deep inside a monotonous wall of noise,... and for a time neither would Prince. . oh, wait It's really funny! Actually, many years ago when Prince's website (Love 4 oneanother) was not providing any worthy news updates, I started looking for alternatives. I really got sick of the propoganda on his site, and finally got fed up when they sent out a bulletin in email calling all the dissatisfied customers of Crystal Ball "haters" (remember some were double-charged, others waited months to receive their product). Looking for another source of 'Prince news' was how I found the org. I was so relieved there was a fansite that allowed honest opinions and real speculation to take place. He is going to give Prince a whole new energy. He is amazing to watch. the best drummer Prince has had so far and he has had some good ones... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! He's an impressive drummer for sure that will step up the LIVE game even more. I hope it pushes Prince in the studio too, the way rehearsals & jam sessions with past bandmates would inspire creative, new music. [Edited 3/5/10 23:45pm] Now that was a post, I loved reading your expression I remember reading an interview by Sheila E. and she said how she and her band would study Prince's albums to get down the sound That to me is very important when translating the album cuts 2 a live space Because it can get lost in a musician showing his skill or just showing off A good example you brought up of the Love Bizzare performance: double band members but it sounded like A Love Bizarre finger cymbals and all Another is when I saw a Parade after show with Sheila e & Mazarati and Sheila got on the drums to play Head and she played it just like the album and it just made the live rendition perfect listening to Blue Limousine & A Million Miles and the beat is just on it and sounds like Prince music, it kinda helps you focus on how the song is sung and let's u hear other sounds that aren't so obvious * side note, listening 2 Brenda on A Million Miles, he should have tapped her for a side project Drive Me Wild has a nice driving beat I Don't Want 2 Leave U Ccreams of Passion & Dear Michaelangelo have beats I can't describe, it just feels so good feels happy. IDW2LeaveU when listening there is a 1-2 beat but its the snare that's really making the drums stand out Anyone who thinks Prince music needs big drums needs to listen all of the Time music, if any music was party music immediately was the Time:Wild n Loose 777-9311 Get It Up the Walk the Stick Sheila E: One Day I'm Gonna Make U Mine, Koo Koo, Hon E Man Love on A Blue Train the 1st 3 almost have the same beat but you never notice there is just enough difference-a cowbell or tamborine pops that set it apart the Family: Mutiny, Screams of Passion, Susannah's Pajamas with the brush/snare effect | |

Awesome Drum patterns always seemed to be vital to him in the early days. Not only did they anchor a song but propelled it.
They resonate as strongly today as the very first time you heard it. Notice how some of his best early work always started on his cool syncopated drum patterns, unadorned just BAMB! "HouseQuake" "When Doves Cry" "Erotic City" "777-9311" "Lady Cab Driver" "Ballad Of Dorothy Parker" "The Future" "Pheromone"...Just about the first thing you hear on all these recordings is one of his stunning drum patterns, that immediately draw you in, placed all alone at the top of the mix at the top of the song.
