Lolita Song came up on shuffle on my way home on the A, and I really noticed how "tight" the song sounded. The synths seem to come to the edge of distortion, which gives it a dirty feel, the drum kit seems miked real close in the mix, especially the bass drum. I'm also feeling the bridge, reminds me of something off of Dirty Mind. I think the simplicity works, maybe Prince should use this more often.
Also back to the drumming, I'm really in awe on how "in the pocket" it is, especically the accents at the end of each verse, and the overall sound in general, very raw. So yeah.. love this track  At this point in history, we have a choice to make

I like the song, but I'm a fan of any synth pop.
I don't like the theme though--it's a common theme that runs through Prince's work when it involves women. They're always portrayed in a certain light where they're a 'temptress' who seek to break up relationships--or they're promiscuous and want to have more than one man at a time. And it's up to Prince, the authority on devotion and pious behavior, to set them straight and teach them a thing or two...on the dancefloor of course. Several 'lolitas' during his career include "Darlin Nikki", "The Beautiful Ones (in this one he doesn't preach though), "Do it Like She like it", etc. The female characters in his movie are the same--even the 'angel' in Graffiti Bridge, Aura, has difficulty chosing 'one man' and can't seem to lay off the bottle and throwing her pussy around when not reciting terrible poetry. To crack Prince's mind open with regards to his attitudes towards women would be fascinating....and probably quite disturbing. | |

Damn, now I have to think of a song where Prince isn't being approached by a lolita... Its honestly because of his celebrity life, he experiences it so much. Though you don't have to be his status to be famous around the women. Something tells me at least then, he was still banging them anyway.
I think though he prefers celibate women these days though, or really in general; look at songs like "Little Red Corvette" At this point in history, we have a choice to make

Love this song. Even though it is an updated "Soft and Wet", I think it is one of his best up tempos of the last 10 or so years. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

True, though in prince's world the "female as temptress" thing is most likely true. Not in my world, of course  Sad, because I have a thing or two to teach a woman...on the dancefloor!My Legacy

It's a decent song, but I feel like the groove is better than the actual song.
I feel like maybe it's older brother Soft & Wet benefits from that old production style where you could not understand what Prince was saying because the vocals are quieter. The lyrics of this song should be buried, as well, so you have to strain to catch one or two phrases. I do like the production better than the other throwback on the album, Black Sweat, which has done permanent hearing damage to me [Edited 3/2/10 11:12am] My Legacy

It is a throw back to earlier Prince/The Time stuff. I loved the way the vocals are delivered on the beat. I remeber hearing it coming after 3121, that song had me floored and this one kept me there. In fact I stayed there until Satisfied. Something BIG Is Coming. |
