We are taking out emotional violence on Prince because musically-he expanded our minds and you know what they say about a mind that has been stretched. But, allow the man his mortality, allow him his dotage and always remember just how far some of these newer acts have to go just to equal his contribution-dude was the hot shit for years creatively, musically, commercially and stylistically. Think about all of the albums realeased since he burst unto the scene that hailed the arrival of the new genuis that would take the baton, and how ALL of them failed to follow up. Prince, in the studio cant push the ball further any more- but that is work for the chilluns anyway, and he's recorded so much i'm not sure he even knows where the mojo is hidden- and that is OK, he's 51. But on stage with an axe he's a frisky pup and he's doin mind boggling shit on the insturment, hell if he took all of his crappy albums and did them live with no studio version we'd eat them all up. Like all of us he used to be in certain area's but in some he still "is" and may be getting even better. He can no longer dance, but he wasnt on par with Mike or JB in that department anyway but with a guitar in his hand he's marching up the all time charts.Heres a gurantee, nobody on this board will be what they used to be if they stick around this thing we call life in 10 yrs. lol, [Edited 3/1/10 3:42am]

maybe it depends on whether he cares what people think. if i were him, i wouldnt. although it could be said he may have accumulated a severe amount of 'negative karma' over the years and this may relate to the severe treatment he receives from fans, but as a musician he deserves nothing but utmost respect, in my humble opinion.
to say "how great Prince used to be".. what exactly does this mean? great at music? recording? creating fresh music? what? as far as i can tell he's still great. i may not particularly like his studio production at the moment, but as a musician/songwriter he's still great, considering his lifestyle and the world he lives in. 30 years of 'me me me' looking out at the world from inside his own universe which apparently has no rules until Judge Kelly steps on the scene lol - did anyone honestly expect his mind to continue to have the same amount of scope it used to? his lifestyle may have taken it's toll on him in more ways than we know. 2039 all treasures retrieved

NeoGeo24bit said: It's pretty clear from Purple 'n Gold and Cause and Effect that Prince can no longer write meaningful music and that any hope of a great new Prince song or album is deader than dead. But Prince will always be a legend, no matter if he realizes 100 bad albums in a row. So this thread is to show appreciation for Prince's past work and accomplishments, kind of like spilling out some champagne when your homie dies.
Well, Prince, I'm pouring out (some) of my Dr. Pepper to remember that you used to be great. Here's to you, Skipper. I wont be toasting nothing, the guy still is great and you're just stuck in the past refusing to move with the times unlike Prince. I just dont get it. Ive said this before. But here is a very short version of it.... Think if he were like the average artist and released an album every 3 years. And the average album being 10 songs. Now think about all his albums since 1990 in 3 year increments. Take the best 10 songs off each album and make ONE album out of them. We would be salivating over his albums if this were the case. Instead of complaining about the "crap" on his albums, enjoy the good stuff. He has released more great songs in the past 32 years than any artist in the same time frame. Just because his albums arent "great" from beginning to end, doesnt mean he has lost it, or he isnt great anymore. MJ was praised for his albums, but my God..he only released a handful of music in his entire solo career. You show me an artist that can release 32 "great" albums in 32 years (some of which are multi cds) and Ill show you my new favorite artist! Excellent...well put and I am in total agreement. I do however prefer the past (80-88), but still stay up on the man and will always support. While I have criticized post 88 and told all non-Prince fans I'm trying to "bring over" to ignore everything after 88, he has had some gems in the 90s, etc, just not as strong as the old stuff IMO. Bottom line--if you count side projects, Prince released 21 albums between 80-88. Nothing more needs to be said--the man is a LEGEND. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

Rolling stone rarely gives a 5 star rating to anyone, and it usually ends up being old timers that get em. I have nothing against Princes age (or dylans), Ive been arguing this case for a while now. He's not cranking out hits like he was in the 80's and early 90's, but the guy is still great!

Again...this is MY opinion Now, take away all songs after, let's say, 1995. Still you'd end up with 75% of your list. I guess you've just proven that the last 15 years weren't the best. I never said this era was his best. His best was definately 1978-1995, no doubt. But this really wasnt the point I was trying to make.
