I just discovered where Prince ripped off Lady Cab Driver from

if not ripped off, at least HEAVILY influenced by:

I've never heard this song before. First reaction was: gee, has this person listened to prince much? I was way off the mark!

Ummmmm....NOOOOO! Time to fix your clock!
Why do people get so excited when they claim they found a song from another artist that Price "ripped off"? Very telling.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

at the beginning of the video it clearly states

"produced by Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin. 1985"

1999 was released in 82.

Not even close. "Pull Up To The Bumper" is a classic song and doesn't sound a bit like "Lady Cab Driver".

Naaa....not even close. Style is one thing, but chord progressions are totally different. Grace's has an island feel.

The only similarity is the honking car horns.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

NONSENSE

If anyone ripped Grace off it's Lady Gaga. She definitely had to be inspired by Grace in a fashion sense. cool

Man... it's in the freaking beginning of the video! 1985 confused people don't do 'research' anymore...

Look!

This sounds like 1999!!! Prince ripped off Britney Spears 400 years later!

I think this was an intentional nod to Prince, it's similar to Nasty Girl and uses the trademark numbers instead of letters, produced by the Neptunes right?

Grace rocks BTW. cool

Start at about :26. Imagine Prince removed Grace's vocal in his head, which I'm sure he did.
I think this song is a pretty damn close approximation.

its pretty extreme to say he ripped her off. grace jones has heavily influenced a lot of musicians.

Exactly, but I wonder how much exposure he really had to her music. When Prince wrote "Lady Cab Driver", he was in the midst of a writing frenzy at his home studio, and Sunset Sound. He was literally pushing out a song a day. Some of those were:

July 6, 1982 - Moonbeam Levels
July 7, 1982 - Lady Cab Driver
July 8, 1982 - Baby You're A Trip

I just don't think, as Prince was putting the final touches on the 1999 album, to be released October 27, 1982, that he was channeling his inner Grace Jones to produce "Lady Cab Driver". The songs are totally different, and the very brannigan that they are similar is more than a minor misnomer.

I won't keep arguing the point. The car horns, the funky guitar, the basic chord structure, the synth thing that is EXACTLY THE SAME, and the timing of hers to his is just to similar for me to dismiss.

I'd say Prince took the concept and made it 100x better, and it's one of his best songs ever, but I like hers too. Heard it on some streaming disco station yesterday.

And minneapolisFunq could have typed those same words without the "you should learn how 2 read" part (especially without doing his own research), and he would not have been rude at all. People love posting insults about other members around here. disbelief
