I think this is my favorite Prince thread ever! I keep checking back in to see what people have posted, especially pictures, and I am never disapointed. So great to hear from other 3121 fans. That album is always in my top 3 for all times. razz

Press Conference

Prince responded by rumors that no one was to speak to him during the recent superbowl halftime press conference by saying “Contrary to the rumor, I will be taking questions.” He then proceded to ask if anyone has any questions and after a reporter asked him something, Prince broke out into an impromptu performance complete with bootyshaking and white girl hair tosses left and right.

The Game, the Artist, the Halftime Show: It’s Prince

By KAREN CROUSE
Published: February 2, 2007

MIAMI, Feb. 1 — Prince, the reclusive pop icon, stepped to the microphone at the Miami Convention Center on Thursday afternoon, apologized in advance for the aural overload he was about to cause, and said, “Contrary to rumor, I’d like to take a few questions right now.”

Well, it was a news conference. But at the first shout of a question, Prince turned his back to the audience of a few hundred reporters and burst into a hard-driving guitar riff that resonated like the first rumblings of thunder in an electrical storm.

Prince and his band squeezed more juice out of their 15-minute preview of their Super Bowl XLI halftime show than could be strained from a grove of Florida orange trees.

He wore a suit, a shirt unbuttoned to his navel and boots, all of which were as orange as the “C” on the Chicago Bears’ helmets. In his dress and in his performance, Prince was as vibrant as Billy Joel, the musician who preceded him on the stage, was dreary. Clad in khaki and black, Joel, who will sing the national anthem, answered questions as if he were channeling New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick.

Prince Fools Media At Super Bowl Press Conference
Daniel Lastra
MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ―

http://cbs4.com/topstorie...07077.html

Prince, who is known for not giving interviews to the media did the unthinkable on Thursday in Miami Beach. He told a crowd of reporters he would take their questions regarding his half-time show during this year's Super Bowl. But the fact that he had his whole band and back-up dancers in position and with their instruments on should have been a dead giveaway that Prince had a trick up his sleave. When the first reporter opened his mouth to ask a question, Prince and the band set off a three song jam session, giving fans a preview of what to expect. His purple majesty wasn't the only famous face present at the media event. Billy Joel and the Cirque Du Soleil performers were also there. Joel, however, focused on a more traditional type of press conference, giving the media his thoughts on singing the national anthem.Later in the evening Chopper 4 captured images of the dress rehearsal held by Prince at Dolphin Stadium, set atop a stage shaped like the symbol he's been using as a moniker for years.

(© MMVII, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.)

“I’m just here to do a press conference,” Joel said. “I’m not here to entertain anybody.”

That job fell to Prince, who was more than up to the task. He sang “Johnny B. Goode,” “Anotherloverholenyohead” and “Get on the Boat.” If his three-song set was any indication, the Bears and the Indianapolis Colts will be hard pressed to outperform him Sunday at Dolphin Stadium.

Maceo Parker Tamar & special guest Prince @ Prospect Park Bandshell

http://www.brooklynvegan...._pr_1.html

I really was going to stay in Thursday night (June 15, 2006) - it was a long week already. But the prospect of laying out on a blanket under the stars (well you can't see them, but I know they're there) while listening to Maceo Parker and band was too irresistable, so I headed to Prospect Park for the opening night of the Celebrate Brooklyn! free concert series, and set up back behind the gate where there was plenty of room. I couldn't see the show, but it sounded just fine. Of course I couldn't resist getting some photos, so a few songs before the end I worked my way in the gate and through the huge crowd.

It was hard - the place was packed. When the show ended I worked my way back out. Then the encore started right about the time I got back to my blanket, and suddenly there was A LOUD ROAR. Everyone was going nuts. Somebody special was obviously on stage. I ran back to the fence and saw a lady in orange.

I wasn't sure who it was until I finally figured out there was a man in white to her left. Even from however-many-feet back I was, I knew immediately it was none other than Prince. That's when I realized the lady was Tamar - the singer he's been pimpin' for the past year (remember the Nokia Theatre show?). My pics of Prince are so-so, so thanks Noel Mendez for sending me this much clearer one....

The encore was just one song - not really that exciting, except well, IT WAS PRINCE....

Proof positive (if any was required) that Prince still has aspiritions of being a 'Pop' star from time to time. If only for the bank it brings, shame it's at the expense of interesting music, 3121 is an immenseley dull, tired re-tread of songs he did better in the past.

I liked 3121, and it's maybe his strongest collection of songs this decade. But I think his last album was able to capture his old sound better. And I'd take TRC any day over 3121.

INterms of songwriting, 3121 may be stronger, but the music on TRC is a million miles above 3121.

This album had the potential to do very well in the charts. had this album been sung by someone else or someone coming into the music business it would have been very well received and achieve high sales.

Only weeks after winning a Webby Award, Prince abruptly shut down his official NPG Music Club website at 12:00 AM on July 4, 2006 after over five years of operation.

The NPG Music Club sent out an email, claiming that "in its current 4m there is a feeling that the NPGMC gone as far as it can go. In a world without limitations and infinite possibilities, has the time come 2 once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These r ?s we in the NPG need 2 answer. In doing so, we have decided 2 put the club on hiatus until further notice."

On the day of the music club's shutdown, a lawsuit was filed against Prince by the British company HM Publishing (owners of the Nature Publishing Group, also NPG). Despite these events occurring on the same day, Prince's attorney has called it pure coincidence and stated that the site did not close due to the trademark dispute.

A fter five years, Prince's NPG Music Club online site is being shut down until further notice. According to a statement released to NPG members, the music club has maximized its potential.

"In its current form, there is a feeling that the NPGMC has gone as far as it can go," reads the statement. "Has the time come to once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These are questions we in the NPG need to answer. In doing so, we have decided to put the club on hiatus until further notice."

Named after Prince's New Power Generation backing band, the site debuted on Valentine's Day 2001. Envisioned as a thriving online community of Prince devotees, the site provided a conduit for fans to obtain new releases and non-album music, secure choice concert seats and receive passes to sound checks and after-parties.

Membership came in two options: $7.75 for basic monthly access or $100 for a premium annual membership. The site, which recently won a Webby Award, had also been dealing with ongoing complaints about its traffic-heavy ticket section. The complaints resulted in Prince lowering the membership price to $2.50 a month or $25 for a lifetime membership. There is no word on when or if the NPGMC will return.

This is the e-mail sent to NPG Music Club Members announcing the closure of NPGMC:

Greetings Family,

The NPG Music Club has been in xistence 4 more than 5 years. In that time we've learned a great deal from each other and about this brave new online world we have all chosen 2 b part of. The members we have been 4tunate enough 2 have join r family have truly made this the best music club any artist could ever dream of. And all the things we have been a part of 2gether -- the concerts, the celebrations, the soundchecks, the discussions and the un4gettable music -- have shown us what a New Power Generation can truly b. We thank u from r hearts 4 sharing urselves and ur love of the music with all of us. It has been a blessing.

Once the NPG Music Club won the 2006 Webby Award, discussions within the NPG began 2 center on what was next. What's the next step in this ever-changing xperiment? The achievements of the past cannot be questioned and we are truly grateful 4 everything that has been accomplished. But in its current 4m there is a feeling that the NPGMC gone as far as it can go. In a world without limitations and infinite possibilities, has the time come 2 once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These r ?s we in the NPG need 2 answer. In doing so, we have decided 2 put the club on hiatus until further notice.

The NPG Music Club was a first step; the lessons learned will last 4ever. Now comes a time of great reflection and restructuring. The future holds nothing but endless opportunity and we plan on seizing it wholeheartedly. Don't u want 2 come?

Love4oneanother,
NPG Music Club 4ever

This explains to me why I like 3121 and not Lotusflow3r so much. 3121 was a seperate thing and I didn't feel the need to compare it to anything that he did before then. With Lotusflow3r I automatically compared it to the witty works of his past and after that it just didn't stand a chance of me liking it.

3121 is good, so no harm in preferring it to Lotus. But I feel like he was actually trying to make an album in the classic Prince style.

For me it just didn't work as well as MPLSound did in capturing that old sound, or TRC did in being truly creative.

But it's a strong set of songs.
