I'm under the impression in Peak the technique was prince putting live sampling to the fore.
"ohhh nooo mutha fucka, not today!" I remember him saying in an interview in that period where he was excited about the live sampling bit. Supposedly the "yelp" in Peach is Kim B. Eventually though, it lead to Tommy leaving the band. He said all his solo's ended up being sampled down to one key.

On the part you are talking about Prince did call a guy up on stage who "attempted" to play, and indeed got laughed off the stage. All in good fun though. Prince was calling him Bud Light, he had long 80's rock star hair. The entire show was filmed, but only parts were broadcast on the Beautiful Experience. Eric Leeds also performed that night in one of the rehearsal areas next to the atrium (don't know who else was playing with him...Jacob Armand or something), there was a snippet of video of it in the Beautiful Experience special. Before Prince started playing, Tony Mosley also came out with some other guys and rapped some song. I was so glad to see the Game Boyz out of the picture, Levi was gone as well. One of my favorite "Prince" nights. [Edited 2/3/10 17:09pm] TRUE BLUE

There was also a little fashion show before Prince came on and a dance performance by Mayte and Jamie King to the song Pheromone. You can see parts of that in the video of Pheromone from the Beautiful Experience special (Mayte has a pink shirt and black shorts on). TRUE BLUE

Bud Light!
You good! .... (good and terrible!!) Tevin, I love you! Can I kiss it? Can I kiss it? Can I kiss it? I believe "Bud Light" was one of the guitarists from Soul Asylum, a fellow Minneapolis band. Prince mentions Soul Asylum at the end of the concert. Have to admit, this CD was and still is some 16 years later, powerful and funky. Heck, the entire "the BEAUTIFUL experience" project was impressive. Everything from the 10,000 magazine, the Interactive CD-ROM project, Gold masquerade balls in Spring 1994 where I fist witnessed 30 minutes of new funk, to the one-word song titles, the Glam Slam Ulysses project, Love Sign, and the funk-dripped grooves that went on for days (Days of Wild, Hide The Bone, etc.). Heck, one of the best-ever grooves recreated live was "Shoop," also by Salt n Pepa, during Prince's birthday weekend at Glam Slam South Beach in 1994. How Prince can recreate a groove like "Shoop" and poetry slam lines of Gett Off and Sexy MF is/was truely funky. Just looking around for lyrics sheets, laying down, and reciting to the beat. Then midway through, he tells "Montalbo," Sonny, Michael B and Tommy to strip the groove, ride with the rim, and Prince so effortesly "whispers" with his one-eyed bass. On top of that everyone in the club yelling out ... "you sexy motherfucker!" An impromptu classic. I could listen for hours "Peep The Technique." The double- drums with Michael B and Prince. "Very impressive." Quite impressed after the many years that Prince, on cue, can play a groove that is someone elses, even if he doesn't listen to "music" only his own music. Case in point -- "None Of Your Business." Salt n Pepa's version was mixed on turntables. Prince and The NPG's was live - and it sounded better. Time to fish out this CD out from the purple stash. Later -- [Edited 2/3/10 22:51pm]

This show has my favourite versions of 'Days Of Wild' and 'Now' mega-funky!
I think Uptown did a report of this party back in 1994. The whole of Paisley Park was decorated and open to attendees. Eric Leeds and Jacob Armen were performing 'The Jazz Experience' in one of the rehearsal rooms, Poet 99 was reciting her poetry in 'The Spoken Word Experience' and Mayte was performing 'Pheromone' and 'Acknowledge Me' in 'The Erotic City Interactive Experience' in the soundstage with Jamie King and the ErotiCity dancers. I love this whole 'Experience' period, so creative. It was like he had wiped the slate clean and was starting again. The Beautiful Experience film made me a fan back in 95 and convinced me to buy a copy of 10,000 Magazine for £40 years ago. In the film, there's footage of P and the band performing 'Now' in the atrium (during the 'Now' video where Nona is stood watching everyone dance) Always wondered if this was filmed on the same night or later on. ...Funky times.... To be honest, I haven't listened to that boot in ages and can't even remember what those songs sound like, except None Of Your Business (Salt-N-Pepa were actually in the audience that night). I do remember Prince getting on the drum set, but I don't remember for which song. This was an amazing night. The premiere of new songs, Prince's short hair cut, his new symbol guitar, Levi was gone (not that that was good), the Game Boyz gone (now THAT was good!), they were selling the single TMBGITW, you could walk all over Paisley Park and check out the studios, drinks and food, Prince shaved Morris's hair off, and I ended up in the video of the Beautiful Experience in crowd shots a few times. There were no seats, except for way in the back. My friends and I made a beeline for front and center after we checked things out for awhile. It was 100.00, but well worth it! TRUE BLUE

It was. His contributions to Prince's music in the years before were far from great. IIRC all band members were gonna have nicknames and the band was gonna be called "10,000", but then sadly Prince went back to "NPG". © Bart Van Hemelen

And while the maracas are going, aren't some of them one handed? Maybe not the ones you're talking about, but the first half of the song or so Michael Bland still does some fills with one hand, I think. Every now and then

I know that nowadays (at least) most live drummers use in ear monitoring to stay in sync with backing track elements (like backing vocal arrangements & additional synth lines). They will usually hear a different arrangement to what the audience would hear, mostly with the addition of a click or strong rhythmic element. I'm not sure if the same techniques would have been employed back in the era we are speaking of, but it wouldn't surprise me. (D')

(D') I'm not a live sound or performance person at all, but my understanding is that this would be the case if the show were sequenced, meaning that the backing vocals and such you mention would be programmed to happen at certain times. With Prince shows in this era, and all eras I would think, there are certainly loops that are turned on and off, and there are a lot of samples that are triggered live and in time by keyboardists. Someone tell me if I'm wrong. Every now and then

Funny story about "Peak The Technique". Someone was kind enough to give me the show that this song was on (on cassette, no less). The song title was listed as "Peter Technique", and until now, I thought that was the correct song title. Thank God for the org, if not for this place, I still would have that song title incorrect.
