I saw this selling for $4.99 at a Target in White Plains.

Very sad either way you cut it.

Not too surprising though considering you can't find a single hit on any of the 3 discs.

Flop.

What? That does not even make sense.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. Prince won't make another dime off those CDs whether they're 5 bucks or 50 bucks.

Prince isnt supposed to make any dime on those CDs. He was paid for them upfront. That was the deal. It was the same with Crystal Ball and Best Buy. Since these albums are not backed by a major label, there are limited productions runs. Only so many CDs are pressed for the initial release and then there are no more made. They become out of print almost immediately. THis is how Emancipation was done. This is why you wont see it in a store brand new - just on a discount bin or store which buys leftover inventory from major retailers.

If enough copies are pressed to make the album go gold and a retailer buys the lot, Prince has an instant gold album - AND all of his money. And he makes far more per album than he ever would under a record contract. This is one reason why he actually made more on Emancipation than he did on Purple Rain.

It is the best possible marketing strategy for Prince. It frees him up to release 3 disc sets whenever he wants to and there is little or no creative corporate filter on his output. This is what was potentially so great about the internet and NPGMC. A good deal of that NPGMCmaterial would have never seen the light of day if the decision to relase it was left ot WB or some other greedy corporation.

In all honesty, I believe it was the cover of the album that hurt his sales. Although we can appreciate the artwork, it could have been on the inside.

Cool Art just doesn't do it sometimes. Prince's Photo should stay on his covers. cool

yeah it looks a bit like someone just bought a new version of photoshop and tryed out every new feature on the same page lol

The 3-cd album version for $5?? You better tell your friends to go and buy a copy, that's outrageous!

Isn't "the morning after" suppose to be on this CD? Just bought one of the 4.99 ones and it didn't have it.

Don't think so. I also bought my copy for $4.99. There was another copy beside it that was still marked at $9.99, so I checked the song lists for each disk to make sure the $4.99 version wasn't a cut one. The lists were the same.
