It's quite amateur, especially in comparison with what came later. I quite like "In Love", "Soft and Wet" and the title track and outright ADORE "Just As Long As We're Together", but that's about it. I find the folky/acoustic stuff boring and forgettable.
That said, it does have its own charm. Now, the second album I like quite a bit more! Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

"Written, composed, performed, and recorded by Prince all before his 20th b-day. Hardly amateur. I'd say Genius written all over it. Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I love it from beginning to end. Same with the Prince album. I think a lot of people are more familiar with his later work.

Wherever did you get such a cockamamie idea? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Its nostalgic, because its the first, but as a piece of work it is average.
Soft and Wet, Just As long, Baby and I'm yours are strong, but the production is too retro. It wasn't until Prince - Prince that he started to show true potential. .

Everytime "For You," is mentioned, I usually say it is my all time favorite album. Better than everything else. I just love that it is Prince's first stone... "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

That's a great song. But it isn't on his first album. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Personally, I Loooove his first album. It showed a range of his possible musical talents back then. Not to mention I was like 4 years old, and remember my Mom playing Prince's first album, and me loving it even at that age...lol! Now, that is one of his albums I almost always listen to from start to finish. "U say that U love me, it don't do no good,
U want me 2 trust U, I wish that I could, U cannot build a house with plastic wood..."

I like 'Prince.' 'For You' just isn't on my radar for regular rotation. It gets played once or twice a year. I never get an urge to hear it. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I thought his potential was evident on 'For You.' I thought 'Prince' was a diversion from his potential. But 'Prince' was to make the label some money not explore his potential. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Because the title wasn't spelled with Prince-bonics. It was supposed to be spelled "4 U".

I think as an artistic achievement it's a whole lot more impressive than most of his post-90s output. It does show plenty of naivety in the lyrics, but I do like the synth-driven sound. His approach to instrumentation was still quite different back then.

That said, it does have its own charm. Now, the second album I like quite a bit more! Prince's debut has a whole lot more lifeliness than Norah Jones' debut album.

Hollywood had not gotten to his head yet. Considering how much of himself he puts into his song lyrics, I think he was writing about the things a teenage boy would worry about: falling and being in love, losing his love, having sex and worrying about getting his girlfriend pregnant, and he probably enjoyed clubbing, so he added in some dance tracks. You definately hear a different, more exposed/corrupted Prince by the time "Prince" is released. Then again, that's my opinion, and I can respect yours, too. "U say that U love me, it don't do no good,
U want me 2 trust U, I wish that I could, U cannot build a house with plastic wood..."
