Why did Prince use his voice in "If a Girl Answers (Don't Hang Up)" I just dusted of that classic Vanity 6 CD, and it really annoys me that he uses a pretty bad "chick" voice to be the female that the members of Vanity 6 call in that song.
It just sounds like a guy they called, who might have been having "guy" relations with the "guy" Vanity wanted to call. It doesn't even sound close to a woman's voice, which makes that song all the more disturbing to me now. Any one else feel the same, or have any insight? I mean, it's not like Prince had a shortage of females around him at that time, that could have easily filled in with a proper female voice. The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

It's called "humour"...
I actually wanted to start an appreciation thread about this song a few days ago, as it doesn't seem to be praised as much as it should be. It is just brilliant. MPLS sound at its finest.

Why is it more disturbing? If anything what you said makes it even funnier!
I think Prince was trying to let his audience "know something" with this song.

Because they're making it into a gay thing.

It's funny when he does stuff like this. I love it on the "Partyman" remix when he calls for the ladies to sing, and then the dudes start singing in a high voice. You could take all this stuff lightly and just see it as fun, or you could read deeper into it and say how Prince was so into playing around with gender and racial roles in the '80s. Either way, it's all good stuff.

A classic, this song is hilarious.
I love it when Prince does his comedy impressions. Think Vibrator and My Summertime Thang too.

So the girl/boy thing in this song is more disturbing than references to necrophilia? "New Power slide...."

Humor and spontaneity. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Ummm... care to elaborate? LOL I mean... I know which part you're talking about, but that was more of a "hard dick" comment than it was a reference to necrophilia. In fact, "necrophilia" never crossed my mind. I think you have ISSUES, darth! lol The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I don't want to hear Prince's voice if they're saying "If a GIRL answers, don't hang up." I can deal with songs like Lovesexy and the voice switching... and I can even deal with songs like Crucial... "Prisoner in love with the opposite gender. I ain't sayin' you're better baby, I ain't sayin' you're not"... But come on... don't give me YOUR voice in a song that's called "If a Girl Answers." It has it's comedic parts, yes. But I find Prince's voice on this track very "disturbing". lol No comment. The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

The same reason why he played a chick in the Vibrator dialog.
"Yeah mah backs been acting up too, in fact it acts up everytime mah boyfriend leaves PFFFT!" surviving on the thought of loving you, it's just like the water
I ain't felt this way in years...

He probably didn't think the Vanity girls were girl enough, or good enough
So he had to show them up, and do it himself
