You don't rate Ibanez then? As stated, I'm a drummer and keyboard player first and foremost, so my "expertise", such as it is, lies in those areas.
Who would be your favourite manufacturer and what would you recommend to someone at an intermediate level? Actually, I can't say that I've ever played one. I just remember a catch phrase that this blues player used to say about Ibanez translating to I'vebeenhad. I really wanted one when I was younger actually. I'm sure they're great. They do have a heavy metal assosciation that I think has kept me from getting one. Right now I have a custom Fender Strat, a vintage Gibson Explorer, an old acoustic, a junky bass, and my new cloud guitar. I'd say overall for the money, Gibson is the best value. If you have an Explorer you're not allowed make fun of the BC Rich guitars If any friends are getting started on guitar and asking for advice on a brand, I usually tell them to get a Squier (cheap brand Fender) strat - although I'm not a strat player myself I've always been impressed with the value for beginners - decent build quality, some "ok" wood underneath the lacquer, and very versatile tonally.

For those that might be interested (and, incidentally, not a bad link considering the "prog-rock" mentions on here), here are two piccies of the Artist and GEM in use! It's not me playing guitar, it's my good friend Ed Wynne (certainly one of the best guitarists in the world at the moment), but I am the ugly one on percussion - lol!
Ian - maybe this is like watching Spinal Tap??!!! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Lovely guitars, I just can't play em I like a slim neck, gloss finish, with good access for the high frets. Any Gibson (or Epiphone) I've tried has just been impossible for me to play

What is the headstock like, is it the newer pointier one or the old-style curvy one? And how about the scratchplate, and the skunk stripe? Prince's stripe is quite wide compared to the newer TE Prinz guitars.

Somebody put on Fake by Alex O Neal please?
Not to turn this into an Ibanez Forum but I also have an 89 Jem same as the photo black with green pickups. And green vines w/PAF PROS. These guitars aren't just "Superstrats". You can use the neck pickup for jazz. The two and 4 positions for a "funk" strat sound. The middle pickup for a tele tone and of course the back pickup for solos. As far as acoustic guitars Taylors are very nice and Carvin is very underrated as far as their bass guitars and their acoustics but both are very good. OK. Back to our Prince chats.

My preference is for Martin acoustics, Fender teles (preferably maple with gloss neck finish), and Warwick basses (although I had a Musicman before that).

The scratchplate is the "pick-guard" - the big plastic piece where you strum the strings, which has a hole cut for the neck pickup etc.

I've got an awesome vintage air guitar - humbuckers, super-slinky shreddable strings and maple fretboard. And when I've finished playing I can sweep the floor with it.

YES PLEASE!!! I'm dying to see that article!
Oh and on BC Rich... I'm pretty sure I saw Mike "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton play one (Warlock) recently which means they GOT to be funky. However, for a truly funky axe check my avatar hectim Yeah, I remember in Guitar Player magazine back in 1999 they had Prince's whole setup mapped out in there. The pedal board was correct too cuz I checked it out when I saw him at Paisley Park earlier that month. I can't remember everything, but I know he had the out of print Boss Vibrato and a Blues Driver pedal as well. I'll try to dig it up somewhere and list it.[/quote]
