When Norah Jones' debut came out, I decided to listen to both of them. I first listened to Norah's and then to Prince's. Prince won! woot! Norah made me snore. zzz

For being his first album, it is quite good. It oozes passion and romance.

It's quite amateur, especially in comparison with what came later. I quite like "In Love", "Soft and Wet" and the title track and outright ADORE "Just As Long As We're Together", but that's about it. I find the folky/acoustic stuff boring and forgettable.

That said, it does have its own charm.

Now, the second album I like quite a bit more!

Prince's debut has a whole lot more lifeliness than Norah Jones' debut album.

That's definitely true!

His songwriting just wasn't quite there, yet, I don't think. smile

Oh, Moonbeam...the man was just a boy and had not yet released his inner freak...lol. Hollywood had not gotten to his head yet. Considering how much of himself he puts into his song lyrics, I think he was writing about the things a teenage boy would worry about: falling and being in love, losing his love, having sex and worrying about getting his girlfriend pregnant, and he probably enjoyed clubbing, so he added in some dance tracks. You definately hear a different, more exposed/corrupted Prince by the time "Prince" is released. Then again, that's my opinion, and I can respect yours, too.

That's the charm of the album, for sure! I just don't really care for the ballads- I don't think he quite knew how to make a good ballad until the next album.

Another thing about For You- Prince took a long, long time recording it, and it cost nearly 3 times the budget for the album! I think a lot of the album does sound overly thought out in comparison with what was to follow.

I don't think it's a bad album at all- and there are several songs on it that I do quite enjoy! However, like the great artist that he is, he improved upon it with subsequent releases.

razz I dunno who told ya that. Some fans don't like it. It was the first album I bought with my own paycheck. lol Of course, I was about 30 some-odd years late, it felt good as a Prince fan. That album has been loaded onto every single mp3 player and computer I have ever owned. The first day I got it, I listened to it all day long, non-stop. When I work on stuff at night, it's usually the first album I will load. My favorite tracks are "Crazy You" and "Just as Long as We're Together"....

good stuff. nod

I definatly like the first album, I just have to be in a particular mood to listen to it. I like the second Self-Titled album much better, personally.

I listened to the 2009 live version of "I'm Yours" recently and it made me go back and pull out the 78 CD.

Yes it sounds dated but it's still better than the mess I hear on R&B radio today.

For You is far better, more original than Newpower Soul, Rave, Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth.

I'd put it above Newpower Soul and maybe on par with Musicology, but I think it's well behind the other 3.

I have to say this is true.

Although a perfectly good and competent album it really didn't show any clue to what Prince would eventually become by say the time of Dirty Mind or 1999.

I doubt anyone at that point would have expected him to be so cocky or sassy and have such explicit lyrics.

Whether he knew it all the time I don't know and maybe it was his plan all along to do it this way.

Who know...? neutral
Shut up already, damn.

Back in '85, my friend picked this up for me on cassette while he and his parents were off somewhere on summer vacation. He popped it in the car stereo to pass the time on the road and, as he tells it, his parents almost disowned him for bringing this 'gay, disco music' into their car!

So that's points in its favour, right there. razz

Love the album!

I was the same way, but it's an album that you learn to like. Like his many biographies says, he was nervous about it being good so he added a bunch of extra layers to the songs. But in my opinion its cool, especially with 'Crazy You' and 'Soft and Wet'
Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I like this album. It has some really good songs, singing and playing on it. For you, soft and wet, just as long as were together, my love is forever, I'm yours are al great, tho not his best. It is overtly romantic minded and lacks the style and edge he later developed. But it is a really good album.
