What Does Prince Need To Be These Days To Please His U.S. Fans?

I have started listening to a lot of Prince music old and new for the first time in 15 years and I find jewels in almost every case...although I am really liking the live bootlegs the most... My question to old fans who have listened continuously throughout the years...what would it take to please you these days? Especially when Prince, as so many American artists, seem to like to tour overseas because fans overseas seem to appreciate them more than American fans. What will it take for American fans to appreciate his music the way it is overseas? I like what I've been hearing and I hope he tours here next year! biggrin

I would like to see Prince embrace his past. Release the shelved projects. Release Vault tracks/albums. Remaster the back catalog. Tour with old band-mates for a few shows. Release full live shows from Dirty Mind through Lovesexy on Blu-ray.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I think that Prince is no longer more popular overseas than in the USA, that was in the past and the younger generation doesn´t even know who he is.
Personally, what I would love to see is some genuine collaboration with his old band members, such as Michael Bland, Sonny Thompson, Wendy & Lisa, Eric Leeds in particualar and maybe a more stripped down band, not a huge band with three or four horn players...then again, he no longer has a huge horn section these days.

Maybe release the old stuff in an unedited, uncensored form AS IS, without changing the old sound we´re all accustomed to, and definitely release more DVD material, old and new. And rerelease the already released shows in some proper quality (Syracuse Purple Rain show, Lovesexy, Beautiful Experience, Undertaker.....and NOT some VHS recorded from Korean TV with Korean subtitles...that was very unprofessional on Paisley Park´s behalf).

When it comes to new recordings....just ditch all the latest technology, go and rent an old warehouse somewhere in Minnesota, buy some old analog equipment, old amps, old LM1s and old synths and don´t care about the sound being a bit shabby.

But this would be like wanting to live in the past again, and maybe wouldn´t really work.

Oh, and one more thing...I forgot to mention Dorito chips during rehearsals. wink

Not sure what he could do 2 please any of his fans at this point.

4 me personally, all he needs 2 do is keep on making albums. 'Lotusflow3r' is better than nearly anything he's released, but his fans just can't seem 2 live in the now. Other than that, a tour with a show somewhere near me would be fantastic.

It really is that simple. Give the fans what they want. He'd fucking rake in the dough, not have to tour or anything. Just let WB or whoever do those remasters, and dish out a few outtakes here and there. Clean up the damn bootleg market a bit more, as he stated was his intentions for Crystal Ball.

He could also please us by not charging $77 for access to what has turned out to be a nearly worthless website...

Release albums and do an ACUTAL tour would go a LONG way into "pleasing" his U.S. fans. Playing LA and Minneapolis (or a residence in Las Vegas) doesn't really cut it for most of us who don't live in those places and can't drop mad $$$ to go for shows announced at the last minute or for shows he may or may not show up to...

I tell DannyD5050 this all of the time. I'm happy with the music we have gotten over the last 10 years or so and love most of it. Many of his fans are still stuck on PR, DM, 1999, SOTT, etc and cannot seem to embrace projects like Lotus or 3121.

I get tired of reading "I wish he would curse again" or "the music isn't the same since he's a JW" and I don't agree with those statements. People still think that he should be singing stuff like 1999 and Irresistible Bitch forever.

Though I would love a tour, I don't have to have one. As long as I don't have to pay $77 for a weak-ass site, then I'm cool!

I think what happens is that overseas fans aren't as hip to the American acts as US fans and when the act becomes cornball, they can't perceive it as well and continue to support acts that have gone soft or are mailing it in. Back to your question, I would like to see Prince give proper credit to The Revolution, Andre Cymone, Morris Day and Eric Leeds and stop fronting as musical genius and all that.

Ernie, I love ya baby. I wasn't saying anyone on this thread. We all have "haters" in our life. At least the people that are doing somehting with life have haters. I just want Prince to be Prince and let his art speak on it's own. Prince needs to do what Prince feels led to do. Not what he thinks will make people happy. Than Prince won't be happy and his soul will die. Just relax and enjoy the ride.

It's really not about the music at this point. He's got enough to ride on. Prince needs to be present, interested, and consistent. And lets not forget friendly. The guise of friendliness and accessibility goes a long way.

Like Nike says:

We are on the same page as this one. Though it seems like Prince still has a lot of demons inside of himself with Warners over the ownership of the masters. I'm sure like any artist you have strong convictions as they are your babies and who wouldn't want to own their own works. Heres the problem, Prince only has himself to blame over the ownership. He entered into a contract that Warners has ownership. He didn't have the vision to renegotiate a new contract when he was at the height of commercial success after Purple Rain. I don't recall any tibid of interviews during the 80's at even hinting of ownership of the masters. By the time he raised it during the 90's his window of opportunity had passed. Bottom line if does agree to do the remasters its a huge blow to his enormous ego. But if he says yes, than he will earn so much credibility from his exisiting fans for giving us what we've been asking for so long and will also probably gain some new fans as well.Come on Skipper!! You can do it!! Let us believe again in you when you would shock the hell out of us with doing the UNEXPECTED!!

nod Until he owns them, he won't ever touch those old albums. And since his separation contract keeps him with the final word on anything WB releases.....well, it's moot.

If i could get one album that was worth listening to all the way through.. i didn't realize that would be a challenge with every album he releases it seems to be nearly impossible to get through it.
