WOW. What a career Prince has had.

“I hope U Like surprises,” his purple highness once said to a packed audience at the American Music awards as he accepted a lifetime achievement prize. And surprise us all he does! Over and over again.

But if you’d asked me in 1990 to give a prediction or status report of Prince during this point in his prolific career, I would have said that he would very much be exactly like Michael Jackson—on top of the charts, and a pale, white woman.

Never in a million years would I imagine him taking on the music industry, sacrificing his good name for 7 years, and converting to an official religion from his previous quazi-Christian/New age leanings.
Throughout all the turmoil, the suing of his fansites, the stillbirth side-projects and Revolution albums, Prince maintains one feature that has remained unchanged—heavy doses of hair relaxer. But even more than that, he’s a complete and total workaholic even now.

Prince is to his own musical universe what Mrs. Brady was to the Brady Bunch—the true leader. Mrs. Brady stepped in and made sure things in the house was in tip top shape when her fey and ineffective husband would not. And through it all, she found time to sneak off the set and fuck Greg (or was it Craig?) Brady. Parallels to Prince abound when I think of Mrs. Brady.

Let’s face it, having gone through 2 marriages, a tumultuous decade, at least 4 terrible websites, several band changes, and countless scandals, would be taxing to anybody. Through it all, Prince kept making music. His output interruptions of the last 10 years have always been more about distribution problems than they have been about a reorientation of his prolific nature. Prince is a powerhouse of creative energy and artistic drive.

It takes real balls to keep making music in the storm. And Prince has absolutely enormous balls. You don’t believe me? Who else in 1993 after having signed a hundred million dollar contract would jepardize it all on principle? Prince has absolutely ENORMOUS balls. You don’t believe me? When’s the last time you’ve seen him do the splits? That’s right—you can’t remember. Cause he’s tired of his bigass balls slapping the floor each time he does those damned splits!

But I have to ask myself several questions when I think of Prince. Firstly, is he gay or not? We’ll never know. I suspect he’s quite the bossy bottom, but that’s only speculation of course. Secondly, is he still changing? Or is he now a rock? Thirdly, what aspects of Prince actually changed over the years, and what stayed the same? I venture to say that the only thing that’s stayed the same is that Prince is still a workhorse. Other than that, he’s like a drag queen in a Bangkok cabaret—constantly changing and flashing his tits.
