Not very long before this Prince was labeling people himself, you know. I'm sure the hippies are still smarting from all the abuse he heaped on them. "Take a bath, hippie!" Words hurt, sometimes.

Anyway, I stopped liking Prince right around the time he wanted to elevate himself from gutter trash. Bikini briefs on bare bed springs ain't exactly a classy image, you know. But it was pretty rock n roll.

-Speaking of booze, let's go back to this time last year and the American Music Awards. You gained national headlines when you nonchalantly said "f**k" on live television. What exactly happened that night?

The fu**ing music awards . . . What happened was I got this phone call the day of the show asking if I wanted to go. We were nominated for two awards, and someone from the band needed to accept if we won. So me and Duff and our girlfriends all got drunk and flipped on down there after a stop at Carl Jrs. When we arrived, it was mass confusion, the whole paparazzi thing. I really didn't give a shit; I just wanted to hang out and have a good time. Anyway, we had third-row seats, and the show was real cheesy and boring. We were smoking and drinking wine, and all of a sudden we won this award. We weren't ready for it. I don't know what I said onstage, but it was short and sweet. I don't think there were too many "fu**s" in it. Then we went backstage. I met Lenny Kravitz, which was cool, but Prince blew us off. He and his entourage just ignored us when we walked by. He didn't say anything, and he probably didn't know who we were. I don't think we're what he'd call good company, and I really didn't care. He looked like a fag that night anyway. Afterward, we went back to our seats, and when the second award came, it was totally unexpected. I got up to the microphone and started to thank the people who helped us out over the years. I said "f***ing" again, and I knew it was live television, so I said, "Oops." But it just slipped out again and again and again. Once I started, that was it. It was just like using an adjective.

I wasn't really drunk. All I had was wine. I had, like, two glasses of wine during the show, and I wasn't that fu**ed up. That's just me -- really, you have to know how I am, especially when I'm in a crowd of people. All this attention is focused on you, and I get very shy. I don't know why, but I can't approach a public situation like that without loosening up. That night, I didn't wear my hat, I didn't have a guitar to hide behind, and I wasn't performing. You walk into one of these places, and you feel almost like you're being X-rayed. Besides, I sort of wanted us to be the fu**ups there, because everybody else was so polite and stiff and unnatural. We were trying to have a good time, and I think out of all the people there, we were the only ones who weren't putting on a facade.

Prince is socially weird.

Slash is not the first great guitarist that Prince has snubbed at an award show. I remember back in '85 or so Stevie Ray Vaughn said he was sitting behind Prince at an awards show and tried talking to him and Prince completely ignored him. SRV was pissed and said something like "They say his name is Prince but he acts more like the Queen bee." SRV was not happy. Prince is socially weird.

The combination of soul & blues with shredder metal scales and licks was something nobody hit the nail on the head up until Slash made the perfect marriage.

I know I'm beating a dead horse topic, but I'm continuously amazed by the number of people who frequent a Prince Fan site just to say that they don't like his work anymore. Why not just frequent the sites of artists you admire???

Slash is a wonderful guitarist, but let's not diss Prince to elevate Slash. Slash's playing did not change the sound of music. However, Prince (his whole concept of music not just his guitar playing) has influenced many more musicians than Slash. That doesn't make Slash any less talented or skilled, but Slash did not change the face or sound of music.

Unfortunately talent and class do not come in the same package. While Slash does possess incredible talent on the guitar, he certainly lacks a bit of class, particularly in this case. Prince, on the other hand, has always shown class. He may be a bit guarded at times, but given the history of those around him, that's understandable. This was less of a snub and more of just a smart choice on Prince's part.

Based solely on guitarrist capabilities, Slash dominates P. Heck he's responsible for inspiration that led millions of kids from past and present to pick up guitars.
But as a whole rounded artist, Prince obviously has an edge.

Something is incorrect about this story.

I remember an interview with Axl Rose talking about him and Prince having a conversation and they clicked a lot. They talked about how being 28 was such a difficult age, Prince himself told him that he was having problems himself at 28.
If this supposedly snubbing was in 1990, Axl would have been exactly 28 years old and Prince 32 so I think Prince was very aware of who Guns and Roses were. Prince was probably being nervous or not interested in socializing at that moment and later on caught up with Axl.
Axl has also been singing some time ago at a party where Prince was (and Penelope Cruz), wasn't it at Prince's house? I'm not sure but they were all together.
