Prince ripping himself off?

I was just trying to think of all the times Prince has a little wordplay or phrase that he re-uses. Sometimes it was originally in an outtake or a vault song, so he recyles it on an official release. But sometimes, he drops a similar line on 2 different albums.

For example:

And all Ur other pennies should scatter - Mr Goodnight
All them other pennies should scatter - There'll Never B Another Like Me

or

All understand and all stand under this affirmation now - Strange but True
I'm a good learner and once I understand, I'll stand under u - Mellow

I don't cound phrases like Love 4 One Another cause that's a recurring theme that's central to his purple mythology.

Any others y'all can think of?

It's far too late in the night for me to recall all of the lyrical repurposing that Prince has done, but I just had to stick my head in here and say kudos to you for your ability to pull such obscure verbage out of thin air and find the 'matches' besides.

Apparently there's quite a bit under that hat, sir...
Hats off.

Adam & Eve remix of Greatest Romance Ever Sold has a Full verse that he reused in Silicon.

Hot Wit U spawned Undeneath The Cream.

Musically, the Camille sounding 'I Like Funky Music' reuses elements of 'Feel U Up'

There's loads when you start thinking about it.

Can't remember it off the top of my head, but the lyric with "Stand up, organise!" (from Sexuality? cant remember) is reused in a lyric on The Rainbow Children (or some song on TRC album).

Less reusing as much as it is a reference or whatever.

Something like "Do you know what I'm saying to you this evening" appears on both Adore & If I was Your Girlfriend. He also relies a lot on the rhymes of the words mother, brother, etc. He also uses the word "Cream" a lot. I think it's ok to re-use phrases as long as it's on seperate albums, especially if it's in reference to the song it was previously used on. biggrin

I think there are 3 distinct camps of Prince re-using of lyrics

1. knowingly referencing older songs "Stand up organize"
2. using phrases and terms he just likes "love4oneanother"
3. recording songs that spawn other songs (releasing them out of chronological order - confusing the origins etc)

.....
