Purple Rain: The Format So efan and some others on another thread mentioned Purple Rain on Laserdisk. I noted that I have the LD of PR as well. Then I thought, as much as we all love Purple Rain, let's find out who has what. Simple question: How many formats do you own Purple Rain on? Here's my list:
Beta VHS CED Laserdisk Original DVD 2 disk DVD Blu-Ray LP LP (purple vinyl) CD I also have these videos/formats: Billboards: Laserdisk The Hits: Laserdisk, DVD Diamonds and Pearls Video Collection: Laserdisk, DVD Graffiti Bridge: Laserdisk, DVD, VHS) Under The Cherry Moon: Laserdisk, DVD, VHS Any of the older stuff is obviously still just VHS like SOTT, Gett Off, 3 Chains...stuff like that. I think Purple Rain is on HD-DVD, which I need to snap up on eBay. My roommate collects films, like 16mm. He's often looked for a 35mm print of Purple Rain. He's found a couple, but it was a bit out of the price range. THAT is the golden chalice for me. I do have a digital copy of a work print of PR, that I just realized existed a few months ago. Interesting to watch, especially where there are no overdubs. Example: Morris and Jerome talking about "That powder-fine baby we saw last night", but was overdubbed to say "that Apollonia babe".

I wish you well in your hunt for that 35mm print.
You are probable right to try and get this version because then you can see the little pictures as you hold them up to the light. But there are machines available to show those other formats you already have. Perhaps it might serve you better to hunt down a good Video/DVD player. Just an idea. Who said I didn't have a machine to play each and every one of those formats that I own?

It is truly a wonderful copy and cheap. The best version out there. __________________________________________________

I wonder if it's in stores up there. I have a few friends in London Ontario that could snag it for me.

I have a 16mm version of the theatrical trailer.
On the work print, I thought Morris said; "that half and half babe..."

On the work print, I thought Morris said; "that half and half babe..." It was definitely "powder fine", which she sort of is.

In fact, I was in London in August, and saw it at the HMV at Masonville Mall.

I bought mine at a record store in Vancouver, and I also saw it in Montreal when I was there a year and a half ago.
