In fairness, she probably doesn't know the answer to that. Remember, she was just around, being LeRoy's wife (I think she worked in wardrobe, but I could be wrong), when Prince said, "Hey, you wanna be in a group?" Any of those proteges walked in and sang to the guide vocal. It's just very unlikely that they were there for any of the recording process, especially since Prince was often a one-man band (as he was on this song).

But she doesn't have to be such a bitch about it. Gheez, she's acting like Fink.

lol if she really said that

But by the time Manic Monday came around she was already in Vanity 6 (1981/82)

I could see Prince having her in the studio, getting info and vibes from her Vanity & Susan Moonsie

yes, and you can hear brenda on backing vocals. the bangles used the basic prince tracks. in fact i think susannah is the only bangle on the record

That's Susanna (Hoffs), not to be confused with Susannah.

I asked Lisa Coleman's wife to ask her about "Manic Monday", just to get the record straight. She was kind enough to do so.

I asked: "Can Lisa pls solve a bet some of us P fans have. Is the demo of "Manic Monday" a band recording, or just P as a one-man band?"

Her answer was this: "It's only Prince. and the 1st 2 lines of the song are true! and he also realized it was 1999 again, in tune and ideas....and both were hits!"

It took me a minute to realize what she meant by the "1999" reference, but the melodies are almost identical. So thanks to Lisa's word, I stand corrected on the band vs. Prince only thing.

I see that the line about "It's 6 o'clock already, and I was just in the middle of dream" might have been the "true" parts, meaning perhaps Prince was snoozing and late for something or whatever. Fun trivia.

Thanks Renata!

nice one.
I once saw an interview with The Bangles where the interviewer asked them what it was like to get a song written by Prince. The bassist Michael said that Prince didnt actually write it and that they did.
I have searched youtube high and low for that video again but I cant find it.
At the time I was put into doubt about Prince's involvement with the track because lets face it we know how Prince can be with other people music that he likes. But then I was reminded of my copy of The Work Vol 1 disc 4 with Manic Monday on it and apart from Susannah Hoffs vocals I dont hear much difference between the 2 tracks.
I wonder why Michael would have said that?I wonder if years of being asked Prince questions just finally pissed her off...who knows?

Michael Steele was probably just tired of answering questions about Prince and decided to have a little fun with it.

"Manic Monday" was released in 1986. Vanity 6 was no more by 1983 after the Triple Threat Tour, and in the early days of the shooting schedule for Purple Rain. Even Apollonia 6 was defunked by that point.

"Manic Monday" was written only a couple of years before that, I believe, during the time Prince was writing material like "17 Days", "Take Me With U", etc for the A6 album. Although it's a romantic notice to think Prince had his bitches around, we have to look at the logic of it and remember that he was often the work horse, and worked alone, quickly, and often, while others slept, took acting classes, and tried to balance their lives in and out of Prince's camp.

Was listening to the melodies and rhythms & writing style of Roadhouse Garden and it has a similar style to Manic Monday, they have similar vibes, could have easily been on the same album

why can't he write like that anymore? confused

Overall I think it's improved except when he reverts to that irritating juvenilism.

I will be the first to admit, I have no proof of this, but the sound in "Manic Monday" feels like Wendy and Lisa had a STRONG influence on this song. My gut tells me this is a Wendy and Lisa sound not Prince. Just my opinion...
Peace,

It's 1999 slowed down . . . . Trying singing 1999 along with it . . .
So unless Wendy and Lisa get credit for that too . . . .

who the fuck is michael? did one of the bangles have a sex change or was a tranny? if they lied to us by making us think the bangles were female, then they'd fucking lie about anything like writing the songs. i often tell people i wrote purple rain, but no cunt ever believes me apart from the old drunk guys in the pub that think i'm talking about prince charles and are only interested in getting another drink

Michael is a woman, in the Bangles . . . . .
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Manic Monday
Originally recorded by Apollonia 6 with background vocals by Prince for their self-titled album, it was eventually replaced by "Happy Birthday, Mr. Christian" at the last minute. It was then given to The Bangles for their 1986 Different Light album.

6 o'clock already, I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissing Valentino by a crystal blue Italian stream
But I can't be late cuz then I guess I just won't get paid
These are the days when U wish your bed was already made

CHORUS:
It's just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
Cuz that's my fun day
My "I don't have 2 run" day
It's just another manic Monday

Have 2 catch an early train, got 2 be 2 work by 9
If I had an airplane, I still couldn't make it on time
Cuz it takes me so long just 2 figure out what I'm gonna wear
Blame it on the train, but the boss is already there

CHORUS

All of the nights, why did my lover have 2 pick last night 2 get down?
(Last night we got down)
Doesn't it matter that I have 2 feed the both of us? Employment's down
But when he tells me in his bedroom voice
"Come on, honey, let's go make some noise," what he says
Time, it goes so fast (when U're having fun)

It's just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
Cuz that's my fun day
It's just another manic Monday
