All of these nominations late in his career are nice and all, but I just hope Prince doesn't look at it like, "I told y'all my music's hot right now. They obviously like the direction my music's going!" He's gonna think what he's been doing most of this decade is hot shit, and it IS, just in a different way. lol

His music has been so boring and pedestrian for a long time now with nothing but retreads of retreads. The only reason I'm still a fan is because of the boots (live and studio), and the memories of just how great, live, he really was! Call me a naysayer if y'all want, but the fact he's getting nominations and wins for the shit he's been putting out the past few years is something short of a miracle.

I mean, "Future Baby Mama" won a Grammy???? If I were the other artists in that category, I'd be highly pissed! LOL!

Or, it is just that people have different tastes than you. Naysayer.

I far from like everything Prince has put out in the last few years, but Future Baby Mama is R&B at its best.

You're kidding, right? He's never shown an attitude of "my stuff's the shit, and where my music's headed is the best shit I've ever done"??? I would say you're a newbie, but I've seen you around here long enough to know that you're not. He's ALWAYS had this attitude, dude, what are you talkin' about? Thing was, though, that during the first half of his career, he was RIGHT!

He's won awards in the early years because the music deserved it. He was clearly heads & shoulders above his "peers" (and I use that loosely). His current music....not so much! Whatever floats your boat, though, I guess...

This is awesome news for an awesome song! Go Prince!

I'm pleasantly surprised by all of the Grammy noms he's recieved over the last few years. He's getting a lot more respect from the mainstream media nowadays. (People made fun of me for being a Prince fan in the 90's. Now they can just suck it! lol)

Care to show us the "quality music litmus test" you are using as proof? Awards are based on opinion, just like the posts on the boards. Some people like his old stuff, some people like the new. It is clear where you stand. Flimsy rationalization doesn't make your opinion more true.

I can tell you now, it won't be Prince.

Who's it gonna be? This one's hard to predict. Certainly not Fogerty. The Boss and Dylan both have strong songs, but the Grammy's is a popularity contest as most awards shows are. Sure, it's all industry insiders and journalist's voting, but it's still about voting "conscientiously correct" and not about which song sticks to your ribs.

My money's on Dylan, though Bruce has long been a favourite of the Academy.

Prince has seven Grammys.
Ain't that enough?

Although it's cool to hear Prince rock out, "Dreamer" is just a cover of "Voodoo Chile (slight return)" with different lyrics (IMHO, of course).

It's still nice to see Prince's name on the list thanks to that other Jim, though!!!

beer Prost!

I would guess that Springsteen will get it. The Minnesota boys, Prince and Dylan are both good contenders, though. It could be a surprise. I highly doubt Bruce, Bob and Neil will actually show up. I don't think they do these shows very often. I'll bet Prince plays at the ceremonies.

None of the songs rock, in my opinion. I predict Bob or Neil will get the Grammy though. Prince has the better song - but those who nominated him have no idea what is rock, and what is not.

Are you kiddin? Ithink you have a very narrow definition of what "rock" is.

Bruce, Bob. & Neil have been defining and "rocking" their own brand of "rock" on their nominated songs for close to 40 years. lol
They are playing pretty much their signature "rock" sound

But I agree, "Dreamer" is the best of the four, and not just saying that cause I'm a Prince fan, because I'm also a huge Neil, Bob, & Bruce fan.

guess they go with whoever pays the most. JT got Blackwell and think someone else for his tour a few years ago..

Lol, Prince has probably sendt his troops out in the live music industry, he made many soldiers over the years, hehe. The world need to funk it up, and he is the General, in general. (lol)

Well, about a more serious issue.

As we all know by now, the battle between the industry and Artists is still going on. And Grammy really made a statement with this nomination...

Old artists with track records of beeing in opposition with often heavy critical lyrics. In the resent light og MJs death, Princes quite direct lyricks on several songs the last years. Dreamer is right up there in lyric content and message. Where is the main stream rock in this category? Grammy standing up FOR the real and free artists on this one, and thats good news. Nomatter who wins, all artists win with this nominations.

http://www.history-of-rock.com/
Rock-and-Roll (räk'n roll') n. first so used (1951) by Alan Freed, Cleveland disc jockey, taken from the song "My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll". The use of rock, roll, rock and roll, etc., with reference to sexual intercourse, is traditional in blues, a form of popular music that evolved in the 1950's from rhythm and blues, characterized by the use of electric guitars, a strong rhythm with an accent on the offbeat, and youth-oriented lyrics. A form of popular music arising from and incorporating a variety of musical styles, especially rhythm and blues, country music, and gospel. Originating in the United States in the 1950s, it is characterized by electronically amplified instrumentation, a heavily accented beat, and relatively simple phrase structure

http://www.silver-dragon-...m/rnr1.htm

Origins of Rock and Roll

The stereotypical rock and roll song uses a fast hard driving offbeat rhythm “borrowed” from gospel music, blues influenced acoustic or electric guitars and lyrics laced with sexual innuendo. The songs were sometimes written by a black author and remade with a white singer that was almost always inferior to the original version. Early rock and roll was much different however. It was heavily piano based and sax driven music that was a bit more heavily influenced by the blues groups of the time and played in underground clubs or "juke joints" by Rock and Roll - The birth of rock music musicians like Big Joe Turner, Chuck Berry, Roy Brown, Bill Haley, Fats Domino and Ike Turner. By 1949 the genre had become a huge movement in the music underground replacing the boogie-woogie style rhythm and blues of the early 40’s with the new faster uptempo fusion of gospel and blues that was now being called rock and roll.

In ‘52 and '53, rock and roll was known by many Americans for its sappy love ballads usually sung by teen-aged crooners with names like the Ravens, and the Cardinals. Unlike many listeners young people had discovered that on the back of these albums were the real rock and roll songs

You're reaching here man. The NARAS is a tool of the industry and it's been a long time since winning one had had anything to do with artistic merit.

But even if that weren't true, how is a nomination for a second-tier award (one that won't even be presented on air) a statement of any kind? I could maybe see what you're getting at if this was Song or Record of the Year, but not in this case.

Thats just my case mate.... Together they form one of musics most influensial artists in history, probably the most heavy named real artists nominated together, with common messages in their music. Grammy dont have the power to withstand sales figures, and pressure from the industri on the main stream awards. But they can, and does nominate real artists in the categories not mentioned mutch by the media. The fact this is not getting attention in the media proves my point. This nomination has grounds for great coverage, where the media can do great back stories on all of them. But, they dont. We feel those nominations aint "important", because of the media. Question... What would you feel as an artist resiving any grammy award? And another question, how do you feel inside, regardless of any pre thoughts on the importance of any price, when Prince gets one? I feel proud, and gives props to any real artist who gets one smile If not, then you miss the hole idea of the grammy idea. This goes out to outstanding performances within any category. Do you think JC practice and is better in his craft, than a world class pianist in the classical genere is? Whats the diffrence, ONLY the media, and what it programming you and me to like... digested electro pop, served with all the known addicting, but brainwashing sugars in the lyricks and mecanical beats.

Sorry, they DID make a great statement. Media dont bother telling it. wink
