Best Version 2 Nigs 4 West Compton Black Album or ONA Live? Just wondered what the general opinion on which is the best version of this track. Personally I prefer the ONA version as it doesn't have the annoying eighties style electronic beat which always sounds like someone hitting two planks of wood together in a tunnel. Having said that the Black Album bass solo kicks butt. Like to know what ya think.

It's hard to compare the two, but I would go for the ONA..L version. Futuristic Fantasy

I must respond becuase this is one of my favorite Prince songs. The Black Album version is PURE FUNK. Period. What's so wrong with the eighties style electronic beat? To creative for ya? Does everything now have to sound oh so effing bland? Hhhmmm? I don't know what you mean by "sounds like someone hitting two planks of wood together in a tunnel". What are you referring to? Go listen to Coldplay.

Good GOD of course it is the Black Album version. I can't do without that Levi Seacer Jr (I think?) bass solo.

Yup - Black album wins, but I do love the ONA version, though its an entirely different groove.
Uhm, Ian, I think it is Prince playing that original bass solo, sounds very much like his style of playing. Levi was godd and could have done it, but his style was much less agressive than Prince can play - just listen to the attack on those strings and also the chords that are played near the end of the solo are just classic Prince. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I used to think that too but I think it's just wishful thinking... it's naturally for Prince fans to assume the little man does everything However if you back and watch some of the concert footage from around that time (maybe the Sign o the Times video too) it's VERY much Levi's style, and very not Prince's style. Prince can slap and pop a bit, but I don't think (at this time in his career at least) Prince was up to this standard on bass. I could be wrong but my vote goes to Levi Does anyone know Levi, does he have an email address? We have to ask him and clear this matter up.

Yup - it would be good to know who was responsible. I've got a good ear, but I could be wrong. Still, (friendly) bet says it's Prince! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

this song is intense on the black album especially with headphones. You can hear all the nuances. Wish that organ was up a bit more though. "Climb in my fur."

Levi is the biggest MIA case in NPG history... he seems to have vanished into thin air He showed up at a party during the first Celebration, is all over the new Sounds of Blackness Album, and apparantly has also started a Christian Music label: For info on the Sounds of Blackness Album: http://www.artistdirect.c...,00.html Here is the homepage of the record company he started: http://www.christiangospelnetwork.org/ It has a contact page so maybe you can get in touch with him through the site. Here is the info on the orgins of the label as provided on the site: The Christian Gospel Network is an new music label started by Levi Seacer and Dick McCalley based in Minneapolis, MN. Both men have felt a call on their lives, from God, to create a new music network of "world class" musicians, writers, producers and performing artists. You may recognize Levi Seacer from his work with many gold and platinum recording artists such as: The Sounds of Blackness, Sheila E, Prince, The Pointer Sisters, to name a few... As owner of American Pro Audio, Dick McCalley has sold studio gear and concert touring packages to hundreds of top recording artists, producers, radio stations and music publishers across America. Together, Levi Seacer and Dick McCalley are believing God to start a new, fresh Gospel record label that will "shake things up" in the music industry. Starting a new record label also gives us an opportunity to recruit new talent. If you are aware of any exceptionally gifted singers, musicians, or songwriters, give us an email. We will be also trying to help new ministries get started in the internet world. This new tool has been very instrumental in the successes of Dr.Creflo Dollar, Bishop TD. Jakes and Joyce Meyers, to name a few. We are launching a new website in the next two weeks, and maybe we can be of some help to you, in your ministry. Email us today. If you do not have access to the internet, there is probably someone you know who does. Have them send an email on your behalf. We cannot promise, but we will make every effort to follow up as time permits. The Christian Gospel Network will have several new releases coming out in the spring of 2001. Listen to these sound clips...we hope you will be excited as we are. Once again, may God Bless you and your family this Holiday Season look for The Christian Gospel Network coming to you in the New Year. The web page isn't the most updated page in the world, but you might be able to get in touch with him. Here is a list of projects he has appeared on: http://www.artistdirect.c...09,00.html

Its a "funky thing" type of term. Chicken grease is funky and so is squirrel meat. They will be around to serve you up some squirrel meat i.e. serve you up some funk. "Climb in my fur."

Black Album hands down!!! The ferociousness of the original track is astounding. I think it's Prince on the Bass, listen to the original version of Crystal Ball. I know that the CB bass solo isn't as fierce but I would bet Ps on the Bass on 2Nigs. The Black Album version is great and gets my vote.
I also believe that Prince plays every instrument on it (including the bass solo), except the synth solo at the end which sounds like Fink. The ONAL version is actually "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothin'". When you hear the band stop at one point, you can hear the audience singing it as though they were prompted earlier in the song. The prompt may have been edited out. Don't know...wasn't there. -2SWANGsunitedforwestjersey
