Ain't nothing wrong with P singing hits on TV / live

just watched Paul McCartney doing the fantastic Children in need gig [UK TV Folks] and all trax were Beatles hits, but the crowd didn't give a shit, some grew up on this, some listened to their parents records, some just knew these songs. What it did do was unite a huge crowd and get them all singin'. So the next time we [and I 100% include myself in this] moan that P lacks confidence in his new material etc just remember the public / masses will always want to hear the hits from your prime period.

Yeah, Prince is the only artist I can think of that gets complaints when he performs classic material.

A majority of artists like Paul McCartney, Rolling Stones, Springsteen, Stevie, etc. their fans pretty much only wanna here classic material.

Although, in 2002 when he did the One Nite Alone tour. He got a lot of complaints that he wasn't playing enough hit songs.

So really, he can't win.

It seems all too simple to me:

Huge crowds/arenas/stadiums- be the supreme showman..give in to spectacle.

play a "hit" heavy fan friendly setlist. 75% hits. 25% new stuff/obscure fan favorites.

Smaller venues/theaters/clubs-show you are an artist..jam the hell out.

Play new stuff, new arrangements of you lesser known classics. 75% new/lesser known material. 25% hits.

Prince always tries to 'mixed it up' for TV etc, obviously he's usually promoting a new album, so he has to play new stuff, maybe with an oldie thrown in.

but if he were to do a Electric Proms or Glastonbury type gig then i would prefer him to do only classics, because a lot of casual/non fans would be watching, and i'd want him to blow everyone away!

Something like this would be nice as a setlist....
1999
Dreamer
Little Red Corvette
Cream (w/Peach Music)
Nothing Compares 2 U
Purple Rain

I want to hear a mix of old and new material, that is energizing to an audience. Start out with old, build them up, and then hit them with the new...throw another oldie in...bring them back! Mix for success--a little for everyone! smile

I liked the fact that he did Controversey and the new stuff for French tv.
