The sad truth about me as a fan Just to clear this up, and maybe shed light on why so many people are disappointed with Prince and his Music since he left Warners (and, as an aside, can I just say HE'S JUST ONE MUSICIAN OUT OF THOUSANDS, CAN HE DO WHAT HE WANTS WITH HIS LIFE PLEASE ?)
Ahem... Sorry. Now, just a little introspection here. If I had to choose between Prince up to Gold, and Prince post Gold, the Post Gold stuff would have to go get it's coat and leave. But... I was trying to figure out why, when it's all just music to experience, and it shouldn't really be compared with anything else, why I as well as a whole slew of people, insist on rating Prince now and matching him against experiences that were another time and another place. I figured it out for me. It's a bit sad... It's more than a little petty... I liked Prince when no-one liked Prince. In fact I loved Prince. And no-one, NO-ONE got it. And then suddenly they got it. Suddenly Purple Rain smacked em in the face. The truth is, I will keep listening to whatever Prince puts out, through curioisity, and if I like what I hear, I'll listen again. But... The reason I keep bleeting on about Prince not being as good as he was, about him needing a major label and some good PR people, is because when he left Warners, when he took a stance, I really really wanted him to come back at them with a killer album. I love emancipation. Don't get me wrong. But despite his promotion, a 3cd set was too much ! No Prince ! No ! I love the music, but I NEED to see you kick Warners ass. I need to see Prince Records Plc dominating the skyline while Warners sinks into the cesspit. I want that untouchable commercial 12 track slice of pop genius, crammed full of chat soaring works of art, playlisted around the world, with cool videos and a sell out world tour. I want Warners to squirm. I want Prince to be the biggest thing ever ! But he's maturer than me, and that isn't what he wants is it. See... Told you... It's us, not Prince. We suck. Fandango

Its a paradox. If he lost his edge completely then his live performances would suck.
He hasn't lost his edge. For some god awful reason he just keeps hiding it. Listen to the blistering covers of Whole Lotta Love and Love Rollercoaster, not to mention the wild renditions of his hits that surfaced on bootleg from this last tour, then compare it to the selection he chose for ONA Live. Its enough to drive some of us mad. We KNOW there are amazing tracks out there, but the official stuff that he finally makes available always seems to be sub par. How do you go from Nothing Compares To U to Emale and say there hasn't been a lack of quality and innovation?

he does it on purpose. why, rd? Its hard to explain but I'll try. A while back in 91-92 he said in an interview that he had a certain song but it was too good to release..he was gonna save it for The dawn release. I read before where he said he had this one song but it was too good to release on the album he was recently promoting,so he was keeping it to put on The Dawn.So all these years of making music, hes been keeping cerain songs to put on this"Dawn" album. The album willbe songs from all over his career, and all songs will have deep meaning. Now he may have scrapped The Dawn project but he has that sensibility about songs that he knows are just jammin. He wants to horde them for himself for his own play etc and to give the public his scraps so to speak. He feels that the world-public at large does not deserve his ultimate beautiful songs...maybe because of his upbringing or maybe he thinks we wont appreciate them etc., who knows? But also not being able to recognize when something is really grand is sometimes a problem for him evidently at times. However he knows when his shit is on the one ..and he chooses to keep it hidden. Now that boots are available he has done this on purpose beasue he knows that we know whats out there etc..he once said "runnin from the paparazzi thats fun..like cops n robbers" so he has this bratty playfulness about him..like "guess what I have hidden up in here nanny nanny". Well, I think Emancipation is freakin' great - one of his best ever - I'm listening to it right now as I write this. I don't think 3 cd's are to much at all...I love every song on it - all 3 cd's.

Its all complete rubbish of course, but if people believe it then fine. I think whats closer to the truth is that Prince actually thought Emancipation was his best work. He put all his effort into that giant monstrosity. That was the one that was an "Up Yours" to Warners, no way was he going to save anything on that one - and to be honest it was a bad album. To all of you who like it, I admire you. I've tried - REALLY hard to like it but its just plain bad. The same goes for Rave, he thought that one contained hits and would be a turning point in his career, which is went to a major with it. Both times he failed, which is why he is now content to be so independant and concentrate on experimental albums like TRC. And long may it continue, its his best album for years and the live set is equally good. Those expecting a Prince "comeback" will be waiting a very long time. I am sure it'll never happen...,

he did that in Europe with the Gold material and Exodus material..and everyone grooved to it. Not everyone grooved to it. I was about half way back at Wembley arena and the majority of people around me were not getting it at all, many left before the show ended. I loved it, one of my favourite Prince gigs, beaten only by the ONA shows. RIP

I was mainly talking about the small hall and club date seh did like Emporium etc. Of course in a large venue like Wembley there is going to be sop many people that there is going to be some who aren't into it. he did that in Europe with the Gold material and Exodus material..and everyone grooved to it. except for the 99% of the audience who came for Purple Rain and other hits. In Den Bosch (the Netherlands) most people were completely pissed off with the show and grooved ... well mostly not. Of course except for the hard-core fans who were in the special section in front of the stage. But behind that area... really, people didn't like it very much.

See my reply above ... In the small venues it was a lot better indeed, Paradiso for 2 nights in a row... amazing stuff! And crowd appreciated it, despite the lack of known songs
