I lost interest around Crystal Ball/NewPower Soul. I was still a fan, I just didn't go out and buy the CDs. I still have never heard NPS
The album that got me into being a huge fan again, of all things was Rave. Then I went back and started re-aquiring his earlier material. And stuff I hadn't heard like everything up to Purple Rain. I was born in '83, so cut me some slack. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Now with lotusflow3r and back now after the latest concerts.
2010. I don't know. I'm sure Prince is asking himself the same questions. Who am I? Do I like myself? Maybe not that one. But. With Prince date and years have a bunch of meaning. Even though he says time is a trick. He is on it. He really does look in the mirror. Staring. It's like his hobby.

Yes, for me it was around the Diamonds & Pearls, Game Boys era. His personality seemed like it changed to me, like he was trying to be something that he wasn't. During that time, I turned heavily towards Michael Jackson.

Hell yes, I left for a long time - about 8 years!
I left after Emancipation, which at the time I thought was complete crap - and at 16 I was getting into dance music so didnt really listen to anything else. I still listened to Prince from time to time, but didnt get anything new. I came back around 2004, not becuase of Musicology but because my boyfriend starting playing my old Prince albums out of curiosity and I redisocvered them.I've caught up as much as possible - some things I didnt mind missing (Rave) but I really wish I'd experienced the NPGMC, but hey. And I remember someone not far away on this thread flaming me on Housequake for talking about this, calling me a fairweather fan and all that. Yawn.

Yes..I started a very similar thread a while back. Rainbow children was my "I give up" point. The almighty return of "Prince"! No more Symbol! The big sticker on the Album cover.."the CONTRAVERSIAL new album by Prince!" I thought..YES, PRINCE IS BACK!!! Then I put it in my cd player... That's when I came back! Well, I never really left, but I certainly wasn't enjoying his music as much throughout the nineties. Then I heard TRC and for the first time in a long time I wasn't disappointed. But I've bought every album and gone to every tour all the way through. Always will.

Musically, the first major dissapointment was the release of Emancipation, because of it's sugary tone and the predicatble arrangements/drumming programming. Gradually I just started to no longer expect these major works with every album and that's fine for me. Every album has good songs, craps songs and I take from it what I like.
Personally, I don't relate to his persona at all anymore; I'm an atheist and his pseudo-wisdom that he preaches here and there is just embarassing. He tries to portray himself as this wise, zen leader of the real intellectual musicians but then makes a sponsord book that looks like Cosmo in hardcover, and has fans pay 77$ for a lame site that hardly offers what it should. So, he remains one of the people I keep an eye on musically but don't care much about on other levels. My taste has expanded so, he has a less exclusive spot now. My bestfriend did in the 90s...he gathered up all his Cds, put them in a bag and dumped them on my doorstep... In the late 90s he regretted it Somtimes I wonder if I have because I haven't bought the new stuff, think he's more of a wanker now than he has been in a very long time and I find myself putting CDs on and just skipping tracks constantly...perhaps it just over exposure to his stuff. I AM curious to hear Lotusfliwer etc but I won't pay tge extrtionate price to puff up the pocket of his latest 20-second pet project who may or maynot also be his fuckbuddy [Edited 11/11/09 2:07am]

Yep, I did 'leave him' for quite some years: 1996 (Emancipation) unto 2004 (right before Musicology). But looking back it probably started with 'Come' (1994) allready
And to be honest, I still don't think he has really gotten his 'mojo' back since 2004.
