If any new act dropped a debut album that was like Musicology the music world (critics and fans) would fucking lose their minds. The diversity of music styles on one single album would cause folks to jump all over celebrating this new bold new talent. However, it's Prince and his genius is expected and often under appreciated.

Hey here's a quick question:

1. IF Prince's amazing back-catalogue 1978 to 2004 didn't exist -

2. and: Musicology was Prince's debut album - followed by 3121, PE and LF/ MPLS...

Judging Prince on these 4 releases:

would you be a Prince fan then....
question

I know I wouldn't be a fan then..... eek

Yeah I most certainly be a FAN4PRINCE! Even if you don't like every track in the selection you mentioned, there are good ones on every album there!

Yeah and how many of you long time fans were true fans after For You? I bet not many. Prince probably got his fan base after the Prince(2nd)album and maybe even after Dirty Mind. Be true to your self.

I'd think we were looking at an incredibly gifted player, but only a fair all-around artist. Lotusflow3r/MPLSound would show some intriguing evolution, but I'd still hold out on calling myself a completist until I saw where he was going with the newer sound.

Yeah I'd be a fan...but I'd probably think that, after 3121, he'd already lost his way.

I don't recall just one album hooking me, I'd say by Purple Rain I thought...this guy is ace and the went back to discover prior to Controversy

I know I wouldn't be a fan then..... eek

I don't think many of us here would be but I bet many others would. The reason why most of us don't get overly excited by recent releases is the very reason why others do, safe and catchy

Absolutely, because, who in this decade would we be comparing him too?

In fact, we'd probably like this stuff MORE, because we wouldn't have the earlier albums to compare them to.

And he STILL rocks live.

No way.
If Prince's career began with Lovesexy,.. as much as I kinda like it, i doubt very much it would have had the impact and curiosity for me to stick with him through the rest of his albums to date.

If his career began in the 90's he would be lucky playing as the opening act for Bell Biv DeVoe at casino gigs.

I mostly follow his ups and downs because of his debut - Sign, I'm not a real big fan of any of his other work in the least.
Lotusflow3r piqued my curiosity again, but MplSound killed it, It was a multi-disk project that canceled each other out.

I did enjoy the Musicology concert very much though, but mostly because he played his 80's music

3121 is just as good as anything released in the 80s. So, I would certainly be a fan.

I'd be a bigger fan than I am now, I love thses albums ('specially since PE was free). Musicology was his funkiest stuff in ages! And 3121 was amazing, a great follow on. Basically, YES

I find it impossible to answer because it would depend on factors such as: what age I was; where I was geographically & consciously on my life path; also what other artists I would be listening to at the time as I would be comparing his music to that and seeing how it all fitted into the grand scheme of things.

Musicology is a great album, but to answer your question, I would have to say probably not.

It was Do Me Baby that turned me into a true fan and kept me coming back to Prince's music year in and year out. I like his newer music, but he doesn't have the same edge and nastiness that his earlier work had.

No.

Assuming that we only take Prince out of the timeline from 1974 to 2004. Then none of these events 1974-2004 took place either - concerts, aftershows, protege projects, bootlegs, clothes, npgmc etc. No Paisley Park either.

I only like a few tracks off of each album from Musicology onwards. (Again assuming you get exactly the same releases without period 1974-2004 having happened).

His live performances would be affected too. Don't forget that his craft has developed over those years. And he wouldn't be free to do shows wherever or whenever.

He's a "slave" (no dispute with WB).

(BTW, what was he doing in that time instead? Busker/one man band? But hey, no assless pants! giggle)

I think it's a given that most of us here would still like funk, whether Prince had existed before Musicology or not. And, I'm sure we'd also still appreciate excellent musicianship.

So, how would you be feeding that penchant, eh? Which current artists would be satiating your desire in that respect and, of those, which are so good that you would have listened to these last 4 albums and decided that you didn't like it?

I think the problem with the original question is that is still acknowledges Prince's past work - you are still comparing it to what he has done instead of being able to successfully pretend that he was never such a giant in music.

So, er, is nobody able to answer that question?

It would have caught my interest, but unlike 1999 it would not have blew my socks off. Nor would I have listened to it as much as I listened to For You when that came out.

Thank you - and, precisely!

As Skywalker rightly pointed out, if any other debut artist had released Musicology, everyone would be pissing their pants at such a stunning debut (especially as it was self-produced and performed - we take such an incredible and uncommon skill for granted (hence why I said none of us here are able to answer the original question without presupposing)).

Prince set an unbelievably high benchmark very early on in his career - which, for him in particular, is equal parts a motiviation and an albatross!

But, you're comparing it to his past work - AGAIN! This is the point - you have to imagine 3 decades of no Prince. Without that kind of legacy, Musicology might have "blown your socks off" - but, you can't comprehend what that would be like, as evidenced by your immediate referral to 1999 wink

Musicology was an Ok album, but am afarid to say, on the merits of CD alone, no.

And the CD's that followed (3121, Planet...) would not have helped much.

Having been a prince fan for more than 20 years, part of the problem I'm having in thinking about this question is the realization that Prince's catalog has undeniably helped shape my taste in music.

So I have to think what my taste in music would be like without 30 years of Prince music and the whole thing just falls apart. Hell, you take Prince out of the equation and the 80's are different. Gets very "It's a Wonderful Life" very quickly.

If somehow my taste in music was identical to what it is now, I wouldn't be a big fan based on the last 4 albums. BUT, I seriously doubt that would be the case.

So, maybe?????

Exactly!!! This type of logic makes a hypothetical even difficult to muster. If I didn't dig Prince, the artist, then i would totally like every little one hit wonder that came out from the 80's on.

Ironically, his genius is what makes me so critical of his musical output in the last few years. Although, I do dig me some Lotusflower, i tell ya.
