Play In The Sunshine! (applying flame retardant clothing)
I always felt that this was the hidden gem on SOTT. I mean, you hear stuff like Ballad Of Dorothy Parker and If I was Your Girlfriend and you just knew that those would be classics that both fans and reviewers would pick out as exceptional (which they are!) But Play In The Sunshine is just a pure pop masterpiece. Never fails to put me in a better mood AND it holds up (hell, it's even better!!) live. Why doesn't he bring this back into the setlists??? me too---always have The snare drum sound I love and the lyrics..and the sludge groove they get into when Prince says "play some of that...wait a minute!" and then he does that razor geetar solo but the sludge rhythm section is also killin...this is a bar song. Love it . . [This message was edited Wed Jan 8 15:40:56 PST 2003 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

A fantastic song!
I loved it then and still do. So fresh still! It's really an anti-drug, mood-altering alchohol consuming song! Steered me right back when I was an impressionable teenager! PLAY!

The SOTT movie version kicks much booty! "Cat can I take you out?" "F@ck off!"

the movie version made me love this song...

I liked it as I got older. It seemed corny when I was a teenager. Nowdays I love the energy.

I Avoid it.one of the things that Made me dig "Sign O THe Times" So Much was that Prince was getting away from the Flower Power vibe of Around the World in a Day&Parade&a Song like "Play in the Sunshine" reminded me of that element that I avoid.when i saw Him Play it Loud it just seemed Loud¬hing more too me.the Lyrics are interesting but the song too this day does nothing for me whatsoever. mistermaxxx

This song ROCKS. It's like it's raining flower petals when that song is playing, I swear. And when he says "Can I get some of that" before launching into his guitar solo...it's just a thing of beauty. I think it's one of the first true "band" moments on a Prince album that you can find, where it almost comes off as improvised but finishes out like a polished gem.

I really like this one, particularly after the live version on SOTT movie. I wonder if it was a trade off between this and Cant Stop This Feeling I Got, as they were too similar to go on the same album, and so Prince probably put Play... on SOTT instead.
It was probably the right choice in the end if that was the case.

Always one of my favorite songs on SOTT and by Prince. I have liked since day one and love it more now. I love it when he rocks out and the message is very positive without being preachy. I think of springtime when I hear this song.

![]() Exactly!! Springtime! Iremember getting the Wonderboy boot on the first GREAT warm spring day in 1997. After hearing the incredible live version, I rediscovered the song. Great memory!!! Matt "Because when you say annihilation my friends, you've said all there is to say" - Henry Rollins

What makes this song great and Prince a genuis is that it follows "Sign o' the times". I remembered first listening to the album - SOTT floored me with its bleak message and the reality of life and then Play in the Sunshine stunned me with its over the top exuberence and it's positivity..
What a great opening. I didn't know where I would be led next... Don't even get me started on Housequake... Damn. --------------------------------------------------

"Play In The Sunshine" is alot of fun. After the somber title track (which talks about AIDS,gangs and abortion),the real fun begins with "Play In The Sunshine".I love how this song segues into "Housequake".

It's brilliant. And speaking of the flow of the opening to this album, what an incredible first 4 tracks we have there - SOTT, PITS, Housequake and TBODP what a consummate consecutive collection! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...
