I think I remember hearing that Eddie Van Halen told Daryl Hall that he bit the synth line from "Jump" directly from "Kiss On My List" Daryl was cool about the whole thing, and even kind of stoked. One of the greats!

Yes there are similarities. I've played both on a piano. There are some similarities in the arrangement of the keyboards/synth parts. Nothing vocallyy though.

Of course there r! I think I remember David Lee Roth mentioning how Eddie bit that 1 from P years ago. I mean let's face it. Back then in the early to mid 80's, almost all the top rock acts were influenced by P in 1 form or another. Stevie Nicks heard LRC for the 1st time in her car and nearly got in2 a car wreck
because she got in2 the groove. lol Then it inspired her 2 write a song and called in P 2 help compose and arrange it. Next thing "Stand Back" became 1 of her biggest solo hits. Phil Collins' "Sussudio" admittedly was taken directly fron "1999." In fact, on some of the earlier takes, Phil had to re-arrange certain parts because it sounded too much like P's song. I'm sure Ernest already knows this (sorry 2 insult ur intelligence). Just a little Princey fact 4 the younger and newer P fans who don't. Peace. cool

Thanks for enlightening me. I didn't even bother to sing the melody to jump. Now I realise that similarity.

I hated that song from the moment I heard/saw it and avoided it like the plague.
I find it SO simple! I could never compare it to the lyrics or funk in Dirty mind. Plus dirty mind has a much gentler approach to the ears. That van Halen guy is the epitome of bad noise to me. But then I am not, have never been and will never be a rocker. cool

Just because my prior comment seemed to be overlooked neutral :

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...on_My_List

"Kiss on My List" is a 1980 song recorded by Daryl Hall and John Oates. It was the third single from their album Voices, and became their second Billboard Hot 100 number-one single (after "Rich Girl" in 1977).

It was written by Janna Allen and Daryl Hall, and produced by Hall and Oates.

While two other songs from the album had returned the duo to chart activity, it was the success of "Kiss on My List" that confirmed the start of the duo's sustained run as one of American pop's top-selling acts, a run that lasted into 1989.

According to Daryl Hall, Eddie Van Halen copied the synth part of this song and used it for the song "Jump" by Van Halen.[1]

Surely Jump is pure rock???? Where on earth is the funk in that one?
But I refuse to go and listen nonetheless to find out.

Nik alot of 80's songs sounded the same back then nod Now technology has further advanced that. I remember when practically every song had a synth sound to it. That was only the beginning IMHO.

The flat out rhythm and chord patterns are damn near identical in the synth hooks. The vocals are totally different and the overall arrangement is different, but if you did a mashup of those synth parts, it'd be an almost-mirror image.
