Thoughts On 1999 1999 is a msterpiece. would prince equal this album with some minneapolis funk.
It's so damn futuristic ahead of it's time. You know pharell timbaland kanye p diddy etc bites from this album. Extended jams bass synth guiter with such precision note for note. So much highlights The bass driven The fast rhythm of let's pretend we're married (reminds me of Billie Jean but more ferocious more intensity) The lines at the end is sheer f*****G briliant. The battle between the synth, guitar on Lady cab Driver and all the other things that goes on in this track is sex. Automatic so so sexy do u just wanna seduce someone and the guitar line I believe is very underated. The synth line has somethin of a divinity feel. All the critics Love U in New York - I have never been to new york but I feel it. The bass & guitar is a killer. DMSR is one of the funkiest track ever. Little Red Corvette the strings is early trance music. Something In The Water such a sad song such a haunting sound all these beat makers would kill for a beat like that. Wish it was longer. I find it 2 short Free & International Lover some of the best ballads he has written. International lover is so sexual gospel u feel u r on a journey. In fact the whole album is. yep. To this day...still killer. No old sound to it at all. Still sounds fresh, which is why it mystifies me that he is so dated sounding now.

Anything with Little Red Corvette or International Lover on it is a classic.

The whole album is perfection, and what makes it more special, is that it was his first true classic. Dirty Mind was unique and moments and brilliance, but lacked the maturity, professionalism and polish this album has.
1999 - The original bop against the bomb anthem, complete with the relay baton vocals and great lyrics, total sing along pop with a message 10/10 Little Red Corvette - One of the sexiest pop songs ever made, very catchy, great lyrics and use of metaphors, cars, jockeys, trojans etc 10/10 Delirious - Another catchy pop song with a stop start organ and very catchy lyrics and chorus, he truly sounds happy here 9/10 Lets Pretend We're Married - My favourite song here, sexy, dirty and poppy all in one and the notorious lyric, along with soul screams taken to extremes, and at the end Prince announces hes off to another world, how about u? 10/10 DMSR - Funky and catchy dance song, with funny lyrics and Prince outlining his manifesto, after all lets not forget this is the ultimate party album too 10/10 Automatic - Also very catchy, here Prince is totally besotted with his lover and will do anything, even be tortured. Its not bad but rambles on a bit long and gets silly towards the end, but still its a great song 8/10 Something in the water - Although a lesser song, I really dig this as well, and despite not having an idea what it is he is singing about it (Think Computer Blue - what is it actually about it), its still great 9/10 Free - Beautiful sung ballad, something Prince was getting accomplished at very quickly, be glad you are free he exclaims next to the sound of Jackboots. It seemed in 1982 at least paranoia was at the full 10/10 Lady Cab Driver - Less this all border on the rapine, the primal thrusts ensure it could never be shipped as a single (Yet he put out Lets Pretend..) Still a good chorus and catchy riffs here 9/10 All the Critics love u in New York - Not as good as the rest of its album, has a poignant lyric and sums up his views on his emerging star quality at the time.7/10 International Lover - Prince combines sex with air travel, again double entendres, classic Prince seduction and lyrics that make the Lockheed steam up along with a climaxing chorus that carries the listener along on a carnal journey, all I can say - amazing 10/10 Along with the interesting artwork, and a great photo of an oiled up, semi naked Prince on a bed in a lascivious pose suggest the idea of how can this elfin looking pixie produce such a magnum opus of carnality set to smooth music is beyond the listener. Despite being his 2nd best album of all time (You can guess what number one is) its also probably his dirtiest which makes it more fun. I just can't get enough of it, it was the first album to show the world he truly was a genius. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

My thoughts are that I just love it...for what it was at the time (83') what the title song became in 2000, when the song was so "Dated, Sounding." and I love it for how nostalgic the whole album is 2day.
MTV was hot and new...and here came a "Purple Prince," driving a little red corvette. Cheerz! to "1999," alwayz and forever. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

My first album was Purple Rain. I don't even have Dirty mind although I know the song. If you were me. Which would you get first. 1999 or TR children? "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

1999. TRC is an acquired taste, where 1999 is a partaaaayyyy joint. Get Dirty Mind too. TRC is out of print, so you might want to pick it up anyway while you can. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

This is Prince coming into his own as a producer and it inspires me in the same way. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I think 1999 is Prince's best work. All songs are one. And fits perfectly with one another.. "Don't make me chase u, even doves have pride.."

I agree but will tie it with SOTT. I know some ppl will want to throw musicology and rainbow children in there but come on...1999 and SOTT showed Prince thinking beyond the box. He was musically free and uninhibited.

Musicology doesn't come anywhere close to 1999 or SOTT, I actually prefer RainbowChildren over Musicology, because of the cohesive music and the so familiar Prince feel to the music

One of the biggest things I've enjoyed about 1976-1989 Prince is all the history behind the album eras. Everything was/is still so interesting, the people the times the look the hunger
I enjoy 1999 point 9 but when I create a 1999 era playlist including What Time is It, Vanity 6, the 1999 outtakes and the Bsides You hear the music different It's like conversations between the albums and the Bside and outtakes give us background information. Purple Music is definative of the 1999 era It takes it to a whole different level. Now you get an interplay between people in his life, his girlfriend, exgirlfriend, friends, highschool friends, lovers, band mates etc etc You get Morris Day Jesse the Time, Jill Jones, Wendy Melvoin, Dez, BrownMark Lisa Bobby & Dr Fink, Vanity Susan M Brenda and this bigger side of Uptown. It's addictive.
