Prince has been the most successful International Male Artist winning five times in 1985, 1992, 1993 and again in 1995 and 1996 as 'The Artist' formerly known as Prince. 1985 TV and radio presenter Noel Edmonds took over as host and oversaw the presentation of the one and only BPI Award for Best Comedy Record to Nigel Planer, in his guise of Neil from the Young Ones, who beat off competition from Alexei Sayle and Mel Brooks. Bob Geldof and Midge Ure’s efforts with Band Aid earned them a Special Award, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and their producer Trevor Horn were both winners at a show which also featured Prince – complete with a giant security guard – collecting his first BPI/BRIT Award. 1985 Winners Paul Young. I remember that show well. Prince's acceptance speech consisted of "Thanks be to God".
I got pissed off with the host, Noel Edmonds, for making some stupid comment about Prince. Although being accompanied onstage by your bodyguard when collecting an award probaby isn't a great idea, especially when the audience consists of music industry execs in tuxedos, not a major threat to Prince's safety I think.

P collected 2 Brit awards in 1985, he, on behalf of P & The Revolution, also picked up the award for Best Film Soundtrack.
Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes to Hollywood presented one of the awards 2 P by saying, "i've never met this person, but i've had sex over the phone with him", which i doubt helped improve P's mood or his shyness !!
