There was another clip of him doing "Kiss" the other day, and the band did a few bars of "Sexy MF" before they went into "Kiss". He didn't sing it, it was just the hook from "Sexy MF" as an intro.

I know folks will hate me for saying this (as if they don't have a list already), but I think Tom's version of "Kiss" is miles above Prince's version in a lot of ways. It's funkier, it's got a better groove, it's more danceable. Prince's will always be iconic for a lot of reasons (moreso for the video, Wendy's facial expressions, etc). But Tom & The Art of Noise nailed a great cover.

It was really very ballsy of Art of Noise and Tom do to a cover so soon after the original (2 years), but they nailed it.

I probably heard Tom Jones sing it first, but I've grown used to Prince doing it. It just feels weird with TJ singing it now. I don't know what to think. Love the lyrics in this song cool

What's to think? There's hundreds of covers out there, but this one is one of the much better ones. It's funky as hell, and beats Prince's version in a lot of ways.

(Watching Tom Jones/Art of Noise video "Kiss")

Butt-head: Prince sure is old.

Beavis: Yeah, and he's white.

Butt-head: Yeah, he has that disease like Michael Jackson.

(Continued)

Butt-head: Hey! This isn't Prince. This is that old guy that stuffs his pants

Ernest i can't agree with you this time.

yes Art of Noise TOM Jones version is nice
but its nothing compared
to Prince's version.

Prince's version is the original,more raw,more
sexy and production
of the song stands the test of time better then 88 version of Tom Jones.
Tom Jones version sounds a bit corny.

Prince's version sounds like it could have been recorded in any decade,it still moves people to the dance floor the same way it did

The thing is, Prince's version isn't his own anyway, it's all about the people who put it together. Tom's version stays true to his own style of music through the years. He did a whole album of covers from The Cardigans, Talking Heads, etc, and it was all new again; totally done in his own Tom Jones style.

It's the same comparison that can be made between Prince's version of Joni's "A Case of You", versus hers. When an artist does a cover, they do it with THEIR flair, and THEIR style that people are used to. No one is trying to be a sound alike of course. Prince's versions of any cover he's done is a "Prince" style.

And reviews at the time of "Kiss" when Prince released it said that, although it was catchy and a good hook, there was one problem: "You can't dance to it." Sorta true. Tom's is a lot funkier and has more bottom to it.

All that's not to say Prince's version is bad or undesirable, because it's obviously a #1 song for him, and quite popular still. People know it when they hear those opening guitar strums. I have a preference to hear Tom's version more often. Art of Noise makes some very interest music, and they did a very original and funky version of the song.

you have some valid points.
Yes David Z did arangment for Prince's song.
but if you listen to Mazarati's version and Prince's version you can hear how much Prince improved kiss.
iF it was released the way Mazarati did it i doubt it would be a hit.
Prince added some kind of urgency and histeria to Kiss that made it a hit we all know.
Its just the fact that covering Prince songs isn't an easy task.
i have heard only a few Prince covers that i can say really work fine in favor of
Artist who covered it
like:
Bill Cobham :Sign o' the Times

You should get a bigger view of life and stop worrying if someone likes a Tom Jones song or not. Odd, that I never made it personal, yet you did. Perhaps there are bigger things on your plate than my musical tastes.

every individual should have a right to chose what suits them

From what I have read, if my diet was dependent on your musical tastes being on my plate, I would starve to death within a short period of time. Oh and forget the 'I never made it personal' shite, you are what you are, that being a troll.

You should hand in your funk pass at the door if you think that the welsh boys take on Kiss is 'funkier' than the one that was released by Prince and the Revolution, once again I say that you should be very embarrassed. However I have a sneaking feeling that there is more to that statement than meets the eye. Tom Jones indeed.
