Is Prince The Last Great Showman ?

Help me out here, just looked at some old video's of Prince, and with the passing of MJ, Prince must be the last Great Showman, of course he's always been a great musician but the question I have is there any showmen left? .... I really can't think of anyone who can reach the standard.

As late as last year articles were being published around the world singling out the "eighties" triumvirate of Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince as being the last "real" stars left in the popular music world, so the question you pose is quite a relevant one.

I was thinking about this the other day. Is there anybody I would like to see in concert???? No. Except Prince biggrin I was thinking about getting tickets for Diana Ross. Now Marco Barsato's company has just gone into administration so one of her shows have to be cancelled. I'm glad I hadn't bought tickets yet. It would be nice to see Ms Ross, but don't know how funky it would be.

But if I saw Prince live, then I'd like to see him play lots of piano,so we can all sing along, and funky guitar so we can groove along. I don't want to see any other singers on stage with him.evil I'm fussy.

Maybe there are other great showmen/women on earth but I don't them them.

I think The Mars Volta count. Cedric Bixler-Zavala (singer) & Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (guitarist) put on a great show by themselves, then throw in the rest of the band who are just bad ass musicians, great times!!!! Even if you don't dig the music, there is no denying the shows they put on, pure energy. Some of the best straight 3 hrs of my life are because of them, lmao.

I refer to him as the last great genius. The last in a line that included Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sly, Jimi Hendrix.....

But yeah Last Great Showman too perhaps. I think a lot of the current crop lean too much towards rap, R&B hmm

Who knows though maybe someone will come along, the tide might change shrug

Part of the problem is that labels want an immediate return. Prince was nurtured in his early years at Warner. I mean he spent the entire budget for three albums on 'For You' and it hardly sold well but the label was patient and believed in him. Would that happen today? I doubt it.
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Nope, that wouldn't happen today. Seems like they need to know you can make them money before you even get signed!!

yeah, cause no one will ever forget Prince. Oh wait - many already have.
This is a stupid question. How will we know? I'm sure people have asked that through the decades and said the same thing we did about the performers they loved.

Your IQ score must read "genius". I've been ranting about this for years. I started thinking about this when James Brown died and felt that there are only two true performers out there with real "showmanship" left, Prince and Michael. Michael went and did himself in so you are right there is only one left. The master himself. Have you seen his live performance of "Got A Broken Heart Again" in Vegas? Even before he starts singing he gets the audience completely into the act. It's a lost art, sadly.

He is definately one of them, but not the only one

It all depends on what setting, what music genre

Madonna weither you like her or not is a very great showman

Tony Bennett(Benedetto) a crooner from the days of Frank Sinatra is still very good, albums and shows, and we talk about Prince looking very young for 50, Tony looks very good for his age.

I give props to those who are much older and still putting their best foot forward

I think Tina Turner is a great showman, she still gives it to you

Yea, I was thinking probably Madonna would fall in this catagory. Not a fan, but even I know she was part of the Awesome threesome (Prince MJ and Madonna).
Tony Bennet..Hmm... maybe for his genre, but I cant see him getting an audience of 40,000 to stand for almost 2 or 3 hours of continuous rocking. Tina Turner.. She is incredible, but Isnt she retired now?

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

What I meant was in different music genre there are many great showmen

Tony Bennett in the music class and genre of big bands is a great showman

Tina Turner came out of retirement last year(?) did or is still doing a tour etc etc, she made her step out with Beyonce at an award show, she still has it

weither it's jazz rock blues gospel opera, there are many different artists in those who are very big and known to but on a very good show always.

Madonna Prince Michael and a few others are in a different catagory
but that doesn't mean they are better showman than people in music genre we may not know of

last time i've checked, we still have Steven Tyler, Axl Rose, Mick Jagger, Robert Plant, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, and heck Ozzy Osborne and Iggy Pop!

Prince deffiantly ranks higher among some of them though.

Prince is definitely in a class of his own when it comes to the live performances. Most of the top sellers nowadays can barely sing and dance at the same time.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

And that's what my boy Cedric Bixler-zavala does. The Mars Volta may not be super big (but they are getting bigger by the day) but Cedric is a badass live. I keep bringing them up but this band is hella boss!!!!

Yes.
Sad but true.

Maxwell, Timberlake and Lady GaGa are trying but they can't reach
the Madonna,MJ and Prince stratosphere.
Coming 2 the end of an era. sad
