Did 'Small Club' kickstart the whole Prince bootleg industry? I heard Small Club for the first time in early 89. It was the first live bootleg I'd heard and I was hooked from the first listen. Amazing performance, setlist, sound quality. I've probably listened to this as much as any official CD. I think it must have piqued a lot of curiosity in his live performances and aftershows in particular. It certainly did me .

another guy who lived in minneapolis had a bootleg called the great white wonder about 30 years before small club, and even prince wise you had the black album, charade, chocolate box, and a bunch of live bootlegs before small club
there were tons of bootlegs about in the 70s for the stones, floyd, grateful dead, led zep, etc | |

Sorry I was referring just to Prince bootlegs and have amended the title of the thread. I'm well aware that Dylan, The Beatles, Grateful Dead, Led ep etc etc were bootlegged back in the day.

I know Charade and Black Album predate Small Club I was kinda thinking of live stuff. regent of first avenue was 21st march 1987 gig, his last first avenue gig until the 07-07-07 aftershow, his previous first avenue gig was 03-06-86 which was known as veni vidi vici or something like that. there was also the crucial and crystal ball boots that came out around 89/90 | |

[Edited 9/16/09 12:56pm] It was the Black Album which ignited my knowledge of and interest in bootlegs, I read about the cancellation, the bootlegging and even reviews of the bootleg in everything from Rolling Stone to my local newspaper. In my search for a copy I became aware of the Prince bootleg market and quickly began collecting. Small Club was among my first 1/2 dozen or so "discoveries" and immediately became the standard by which all other live recordings were judged. The combination of being an intimate aftershow, the incredible setlist with great covers and new unheard tracks, and the terrific audio quality all came together to make this the one to beat... To more specifically answer you question, several of the boots I got before Small Club were live, so the curiosity and excitement for live boots already existed, this one simply surpassed all others in nearly every way making it much more difficult for a time to enjoy the noisy audience recordings that were the norm. Now, not to hijack the thread, this is related: I'm curious as to other's memory of which of the many boots with this show came first. The first one I had and the first one I ever saw was the 3LP by Martens Records, and the first CD copy I saw, and bought, was a 2CD by X Rekords, both listed as being made in France. I've seen and heard many, many other releases over the years and still consider these the best. IMO, even better than more recent "remaster" versions... Other memories and/or opinions? Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors. |

I know Charade and Black Album predate Small Club I was kinda thinking of live stuff. the live ones I had prior were: The Regent Of First Avenue 3/21/87 When Doves Cry It's A Sign Of The Times (Sweden 87) He's Got The Look (Aftershow Paris 6/14/87) Just My Imagination (Camden Palace 88) Pure Sex (London 86) Camille's Crystal Ball (Outtakes + Little Rock '83 gig) not in this exact order, AND perhaps 1 or 2 came after Small Club, not sure, I do remember that my very first bootleg was WDCIASOTT Sweden 87, I picked it up on an otherwise unsuccessful search for the Black Album. X Records was indeed the first release. What I had back in the day was a tape of that release I didn't pick up an actual CD until about 93 (when I started collecting bootleg CDs in earnest). The first boot with a proper cover was the megamix "From 1999 till now" in 1985. This was followed by a spat of DJ mixes without covers, such as the fatbag remixes.
Live tapes were obviously doing the rounds, but the he first live LP I remember was the lovely Rotterdam 86 double album ("Stop fighting!"), in Oct 86, followed a couple of weeks later by the Wembley double album. I think it was the The Atlanta 85 show next, but my memory is not what it was! I think the first "great" was the Regent Of First Avenue. . |

I ended up trading Sex Machine since I had it twice... anybody out there that still has a copy, check the label, see if it says He's Got The Look on Blue Lake Records... Don't hate your neighbors. I had the Parade Tour boot on vinyl and the Sign O' the Times tour on vinyl long before Small Club. Back then also the bootlegs for Prince were more about unreleased material as opposed to live performances. It's the opposite of that today. When  go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all  up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming! | |

Small Club was my first boot, and it definitely sparked my interest in Prince bootleg material. From there, I have purchased every live performance that I could get my hands on. I think that some of the early Dirty Mind/Controversy live performances were good as far as sound quality, but Small Club was just an amazing bootleg. OMG, I forgot about this one. I too got the Black Album on tape in 1986 from this guy named Gregory for $20 at the old Tower Records on Sunset here in LA. Perhaps you refer to a never-before performed improvised song that sometimes goes by the title "Wasn't My Face" (again, as given by bootleggers).It was never played live again, and there is no studio recording of it available either. | |
