I'm so glad Prince never sold out by pandering to MTV et al.

Prince is one of the only big players in the industry who has maintained his integrity and kept it about the music...

Exactly. I think Matty's post glosses over a lot of the choices Prince has made in the past (he's performed for MTV and VH-1 before), and ignores the biggest reason Prince wasn't involved: he wasn't asked.

Prince made a couple of videos this year, one of which (Chocolate Box) was obviously a ploy to get some airtime and it didn't get picked up. Prince isn't above anything, he just isn't the commerical/cultural force he once was, or that any of the people on the VMA's last night are now.

And he performed on the Grammy's with the chick who Kanye said had the best video ever.

In Matty's defense. I feel the point 2 be driven home was the silly antics of Kanye West and other so-called "relevant" acts of the past five years. How easily we forget the Super Bowl debacle the week prior to that Prince/Beyonce performance at the Grammys. Talk about a 180-degree turn-around!

Another example was P's perfomance at the Super Bowl when he played PR during the light drizzle. Just beautiful! Newspapers worldwide just raved the performance. MJ's and Bruce's halftime shows were amazing as well. I can go on and on but the bottom line is this - MJ(RIP), Bruce, and P has what Kanye and others like him (please don't think he's the only 1; he's just the obvious 1!) wish that they can have a tenth of - CLASS.

Now as far as being asked or not being asked to join the show is concerned. Now this just my opinion and I could b wrong, but I don't think I'm alone here when I say that if P had wanted to he could have called the producer of the VMAs and mentioned that he would like to make an appearance and do a tribute to MJ on just acoustic guitar. Not only would they scramble to put him on but they would say "Sure. Initially we booked Kanye so he could cut-up and act a fool as usual, but hey c'mon down." They would've sat Kanye's tail in the back row and told him to open a can of "Shut the F Up. P's here. Watch and listen U might learn something." lol P would've played I dunno pick 1 or 2 (I'll B There and Human Nature) on acoustic guitar alone that would've literally brought down the house and even made Papa Joe proud.

Now this latest Kanye debacle last night was just plain despicable and a total disgrace at best! So U're darned right I'm proud that neither P NOR MJ(RIP), for that matter was a part of it. Now some may argue he apologized and tell us to get over it. Well I got an answer 4 U, not no but hell naw! (Now I'm talking in general here, so please don't think I'm signaling anyone out here on this forum. I'm just venting!) Maybe it was a staged event, I dunno, but still tasteless.

Now Taylor Swift, a musician, singer-sonwriter who have struggled to make a name for herself and at the tender age of 19 has led the way not only in Country music but also in pop. Remember, when P mentioned real music by real musicians a few years back; Taylor, Alicia K, and John Mayer definitely fit this for the younger artists. Kanye, well I'll leave that up for debate.

Now I realize that VMA has always been known for antics. MJ kissing Lisa Marie; Madge kissing Britney and Christina; and yes folks, P's buttless pants back in '91! But at least they backed it up with great songs and performances. Something Kanye could learn a little from.

Finally, I like Kanye's music and have bought all of his CDs and I have defended him over the years, but this was ridiculous! Now P is not sooo above the VMAs, just like MJ, Madge, or Janet is not. But at least these guys along with my home-gurls Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson (who rightfully ripped K a new one in an article!) have enough respect and consideration not to partake in Kanye antics.

I get what Matty's saying. P's made some good/GREAT decisions in the past by not being part of the mainstream hype. But he's also made some bad calls aswell. confused

Things like, not being a part of We are the World, wouldve been a big call at the time, but time will show that it was a great move, as he wouldve got lost amoungst it all, being the type of person he is. BUT then he goes and does the reunion years later and sucks on a lollipop. confused confused

Oh P.

"3121 - The Flavor of Love Mtv©®tm" biggrin Horrible..! But we both know some of the orgers would be watching that show everyday (All of the so-called "the future Mrs.Nelson") - and they would have EVERY show recorded biggrin Now I'm really glad he's NOT THE PART OF THAT SCENE biggrin

all of it is true, prince is irrelevant in this market yet he's too grown and above all of the shananigans. prince is a true veteran achiever-in other words he picks his spots. i believe he is taking the rest of 09'off due to the MJ death and the fact that he cant really push lotusflowr3 without a fullscale tour-something few 50 somethings love to do. He's biding his time, but in 10'if he chooses to make a splash with something mtv would endorse (like a revolution reunion and album) he'll be on the award show circuit trust me. Prince aint above that green paper, nor is he above being treated as the godfather of sex/funk by the chilluns. What Kanye did, and what a lot of these new jacks do all in the name of hyperexposure in todays 5 hour news cycle is all the more reason to be thankful i 2 am too grown to care. That guy did that to a 17 year old child, since when did his taste (or anyone elses?) give him the right to think he can steal her moment. I swear if he claims racism over some damn music when our President is dealing with the crazy shit he's dealing with he sould be arrested. I dont like country music and believe what he said about Beyonces video but he deserves to get his ass kicked for that one. Kudos to Beyonce, a real talent married to a real MC (no skinny jeans lol) for allowing the kid to have her moment.

The problem with all of these acts is that they were made by the media/record company/MTV hype machine. There is no acts out there that have the MJ,Madonna,Prince "it" factor and if they are out there the biz will not get those acts to the masses.

As far as the Prince being "irrelevant" its sad that people would even think that he was irrelevant considering that an artist has to whore themselves to these people to be heard.

Prince came to Nashville,Tn with a brand new album and sold out the GEC which had not been done at that point and also had a Country music whos who in the croud.

I think Prince does make appearances but he picks his moments. However in the main I think you are right but I think this is down to style over substance.I don't think Prince has that paranoia of other stars i.e. If I don't appear at the opening of an envelope people will forget who I am. rightly or wrongly I think Prince has enough self belief to chose where and when he appears. I think the only time he let himself down in this regard was appearing on American Idol. He did his thing almost to show people up, the way he walked off at the end. However to me it came across as very insecure-that he almost secretly feared the laziness of the buying public choosing this mediocrity.

What do you mean. whether Prince deserves it or not, award ceremonies etc give him a lot of respect. Prince is in a position to punch higher than his weight commercially-so yes I do believe that he can make a call. I understand what you mean (If I'm interpreting correctly) that the general audience to these shows couldn't give a toss about Prince-but he is so namechecked by those artists that they do care about-I feel that producers would let him on regardless. I think demographic would go out of the window. I'm not bigging Prince up here at all-I understand wher he has let himself down. But I do believe he has turned into one of those mythical figures whereby to slag him off means you either know nothing of him or possibly too much

he seems happy now, happy to be a mythic figure. dont get me wrong, he wants a hit but he finally seems comfortable in elder statesman/legend role. i also believe he's taking 09 off because of the MJ tributes, nothing tasteless but just knowing theres only one legend on stage right now. When This is it plus the MJ album drops in Oct it will be banana's. Prince will have to let the dust clear and drop something significantly meaningful in fall 10'to get the reigns back. I'm telling U if there was ever a time to consider the revolution it would be now. Thats the only thing from a business standpoint the industry would get behind no matter what we here think...it's the last playable chip. He milked the HOF thing, established himself as the live concert legend and plays when he wants but mainstream recognition? interviews?, mainstream attention?, 20 minute chunks of award shows etc?. The Revolution.

think you're pushin it with this one. Then again neither of us is in a position to call it 100%. Just out of interest what was the situation around the A.I.appearance, he 'seemed' to call the shots on that one to the point of pissing everyone!.

Keep it real about MTV and the VMA show. Everyone got one award a piece and free drinks at the bar. A couple of good performances and one great one(Pink). It's not a credible show in the fact that MTV doesn't air these videos as much as they should. It's just a lame excuse to get some ratings and drunk at the same time. Prince was involved with it back when it was about music but that time is gone. The same goes for VH-1 since all the care about is setting up c-list celebrities with whoever is hungry enough for 15 minutes of "fame".
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!
